Which do you think people would rather have, hardwood or carpet in the bedrooms? If we sell we really need to get rid of the carpet we have. Underneath is all original hardwood. So I can't decide if we should refinish or cover it.

Refinish definitely, we are getting rid of the carpet in our house too. I think hardwoods sell better nowadays

I think that hardwoods are more popular in the rest of the house but that many people still want carpet in the bedroom.

Hardwood, but get some large area rugs for the bedrooms too. That will help the rooms look bigger and cozier (and will be way easier to clean)
Don't buy them though, either rent or borrow a few rugs. Especially in a hot market, where you wouldn't have to rent for long.

If I had the choice, I would never buy a house with carpets, only hardwood.

Fo course if the price was right or I fell in love with it, I would.

I can't stand carpet. It's impossible to keep clean. Refinish all the way!

Refinish the wood. It's easier to keep it looking nice when you're showing the house and doesn't limit a potential buyer's decorating options the way carpeting would.

I loathe carpet! I would much rather have hardwood. I agree with putting area rugs in the bedroom, though. Makes it seem much more cozy.

hardwood, its worth more money, if its already there and just needs refinishing, then do it. hardwoods are easier to clean as well, carpets get stained and you cant sweep them heh

I myself can't stand hardwood in a bedroom, I'd prefer carpet, but for resale, I'd definitely say refinish the hardwood. A buyer knows they can put carpet over hardwood, but having the hardwood visible and looking good is a much better selling point than new carpets now a days.

I'm going to suggest an "other"... what about offering an allowance to replace the carpet or refinish the wood? That lets the buyer choose and pick the carpet if that's what they want.

Go with the hardwood. For people with asthma it could be a major selling point. Definitely refinish them first-some people will want a house "move in ready."

I absolutely HATE carpet. DH insists that we have it in the living room and bedrooms. Yuck.

I have to vote for carpet, and I'll tell you why. When we moved into our home, our entire main floor was all hardwood. We lived with hardwood in our bedrooms for a few years and then decided to get carpet after our son was born. I love having carpet in the bedroom for the following reasons:

-It insulates against sounds from other parts of the house, primarily from the basement where dh spends time watching tv and playing computer games at night.
-We have two cats and it cuts down on visible dust, dander and cat hair in the bedroom. I tend to vacuum more often, but it's definitely easier to clean. When you have hardwood, the area under the bed becomes no-man's land (dusty) unless you are really consistent in your cleaning routine.
-It seems to make the room warmer
-No need to purchase area rugs (I for one, like to step onto something warm and soft when I get out of bed)
-not so much of a worry when kids fall out of bed

I love having hardwood in the rest of the house, but honestly, I felt the allergies, etc... were worse with hardwood because the cat hair, dander and dust were constantly floating around. The carpet is not a problem for me, and I feel, stays very clean as long as I vacuum about twice a week.
That said, I would not be a fan of purchasing a home with existing carpeting unless it was brand new. I like the idea of offering an allowance, then the buyer can choose what suits them best.

We like wood in the bedroom, my husband is allergic to dust. it has made a significant difference now that there's no carpet. Anyway, used carpet is disgusting in itself.

one of the main reasons we bought our house was that there was no carpet, and it has all the old, beautiful hardwood floors. even the stairs and bedrooms and kitchen are hardwood. i love it.

Growing up, our house had hardwood floors and I remember my mom slaving away stripping and cleaning and re-waxing the floors. No way would I want that. Are newer floors different now?

Hardwood! You can always use rugs if you need them, but I hate nasty carpet.

That said, my In-laws have some awesome carpet that is brand new and almost like shag and it feels so awesome. Easily dirtied, but if I had the $$ they dished out for it, I would consider it.
