So, I just completed the second step in the process of finding out if I could be a match to donate a kidney to a friend's daughter (click "Amanda" in my siggy). I am really excited about the possibility of donating and giving this little girl a chance at the life that she wants and deserves. Has anyone here donated a kidney? If so, I would appreciate hearing your story. Please pray (or send vibes or whatever) that I am a match!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Just out of curiousity, what does it take to be a match? I always assumed it was just blood type, which is simple enough to test for. But is there more to it than that?

I really hope I am, I just wish that they had a regisitry like the national bone marrow regisitry so that if i don't match her I could possibly be matched with someone else. I just know that I would want someone to step forward if it was my child who needed a transplant, so I am just doing the same for someone else.

It is more than just blood type, more specific than that, but I'm not sure of the specifics off the top of my head. I've done a lot of reading on donation though.

Just got a call from the hospital where Amanda is being treated and they said that they just found out that she was transplanted last night! I am so glad that she got a new kidney! So they won't need me to donate after all. But I am so happy for her (and her family) that their wait for a kidney is over! :

It is wonderful news! This is her second transplant. Her first was in 2004 and the disease attacked the healthy kidney Please pray that this kidney stays healthy and that the FSGS will not return :

Yay!! I am just bawlling after reading Amandas site... poor baby. It is so unfair. My grandfather died of Kidney disease & it was horrible, the dialysis was the worse, I can't imagine a child having to go through that. I am praying for that sweet girl!

I hope things go well for Amanda! I just looked over her site. She's a lovely little girl.

Here is an update on Amanda (first one on the page): http://amandas-story.org/archive.asp

The transplanted kidney is "asleep" and producing very little urine. Please pray that the new kidney starts working! :
