My inlaws just called the house. At 11:45 PM. To wish us a happy new year. Ugh, that's great and all but I don't give a shoot if it's NYE, my toddler is asleep and so is hubby who has to work. I just thought it was really rude. Another instance where they just-don't-think.

FIL had me on speaker phone and when I replied obviously PO'ed I could hear my MIL and whoever else laughing in the background. Not funny. Get a life.

That's not caring, not when there's been a request made that they not call so late, not when they're laughing in the background.

There's nothing to be done about the background noise of fireworks, but ...

I know not to call my parents because they're out at their city's 1st night.

I am very very big on not calling someones house late...and since kids i have a strict no calls after 9 unless someone is dying rule...however....my family has always called on new years at midnight, just to say I love you and happy new years and good night....And I am sad I never talked to my mom tonight, her phone is off which means she is probably sick...you never know how many new years you have left with someone!

The calling doesn't bother me because I don't have anyone that it would wake up.

What bugs me though is the neighbors firing guns into the air!!! I tried calling the police but no one answered. Oh get me out of this town!

Do you/they celebrate Christmas?

IF so, I endorse calling them at 5 AM if you've got an early-riser kiddo to wish them a Merry Christmas. Or, conversely, if you think they might have had a few too many last night you could call them first thing in the morning on New Years Day to ask how the first few hours of the new year is going for them...

It's not my parents who called me... it's my friends. My dd wasn't feeling well so we skipped the NYE party this time. After having several drunken slurred conversations with my buddies I turned off the house phone. Since they couldn't call anymore they reverted to texting, and I had 4 misspelled text messages waiting on me when I got up at 6:30 this morning.

As soon as I got my coffee I called every single one of them on their cell phones to wish them a happy January 1 and to ask for all the details of last night. They are waaay less interested in talking to me this morning than last night. Wonder why?!

DD: I'm bored and want to play Me: What about me? I can play. DD: No thanks, I mean a real person.

Oh yes--ITA with this! Very good strategy...and be sure to put them on speaker phone and LAUGH out loud in the background when they sound PO'd...this is something my outlaws would do/have done/will do again.
I turn the ringers off on nights I suspect that they will do this and I get right down rude with them--however, they don't do it during any special times of the year---like new year--they do it whenever they want.

Here in FL, that is what our neighbors do as well. Nope...it's not just that either...they use nearly every holiday as an excuse to blow something up.

When my Mom was alive we used to call each other at midnight just to say goodness we haven't talked since last year, guess it was a corny thing but now that she is deceased, I miss it..

To the OP sorry you were annoyed but I doubt your IL's thought they were doing anything wrong.

My DD was over at my parent's house helping babysit my niece. This is the first New Year that we didn't call each other - I was afraid of waking the baby.

This is the first year we HAVEN'T talked to family at midnight. We've all been sick/dealing with other stuff, so the kids and dh were asleep early, I went to bed around 11, watched the ball drop in bed, tv off and asleep by 12:30
