To the programmers of such things: Could ya maybe time it so that I actually have time to wipe before it flushes?!?!

YES!!

Oh, and maybe make it flush a tiny bit quieter? Because I'm never quite 'ready' for it to flush when it does - it always surprises and scares me when it goes off.

Those things scare the daylights out of DD's friend (also 3yo). She is learning to use the potty/toilet and every time she and her mom go to the mall and has to use one of the Toddler Toilets, they automatically flush before she is done, of course, causing her to jump 3 feet in the air, and likely undoing all of her mother's positive reinforcement about the potty.

Poor thing is going to grow up thinking the toilet is out to get her.

I hear a Post-It note tacked to the sensor is the key to keeping it from flushing early.

Or have them actually flush when I stand all the way up? I have to push the button about 90% of the time I use on of those.

I've been meaning to write to Whole Foods about theirs. Every time I use them it flushes as soon as I stand up before any wiping has occurred. Yesterday, I wiped so quickly so I could get it in the toilet before it was done flushing that I didn't get it all and my underwear got wet. Ewwww!!!

They either flush much too soon or not at all. Can't they find a happy medium :

The key is to keep your feet firmly planted. sitting, standing, squating somewhere in between, just don't move your feet.

Or, cover the sensor.

We always, always, always cover the sensor with a piece of toilet paper draped over the dang thing. My kiddos think it is flushing them down when it flushes to early. Plus when all of us use the potty together, it is much less waste of water for us all four to use the same bowl. It would take ages for us to all go if we had to wait for the dang thing to flush after each of us.

When I'm with my son, I often drape a piece of toilet paper over the sensor (if it's on the pipe, and not embedded into the wall) so that he gets to flush the toilet. (This is important to him.)

I find that some flush when I lean over to wipe, especially now that I've got pregnant belly restricting my twisting movement. ;-) But, yeah, I don't quite get the standing up first before wiping thing, either... so that doesn't happen to me.

My GF and I have this conversation all the time... not about the automatic flushing toilets, but about wiping while sitting or standing. If one were to remain sitting while wiping the toilet would not flush, but I tend to stand while wiping and thus the toilet flushes. It is kind of a hot debate among women I hear... wiping while sitting vs. wiping while standing. I think we need a poll!

Maybe we do. I just can't picture how one would wipe while standing. Maybe this is TMI, but uh... there's not room for my hand down there if my thighs are on either side!

Besides which, I don't trust myself to wipe front-to-back properly if I reach from the front, and I can only reach from the back if I'm sitting/squatting.

I hate those things. they either flush too soon and scare me or they dont flush at all and I have to side kick the little tiny button since I wont touch it with my finger....eeeww. They are too loud and they tend to flush too vigorously and splash a bit, especially the target pottys here.

Lol we have these at the building where I work and they get hung up or something and flush non stop for 30 minutes or more until we get someone up to fix it. They sound like a jet taking off.

I think the key here would not be to sit on the toilet at all. seriously, public toilets can be gross!

I just reach behind me (ok, when not pregnant) and put my finger over the sensor, or I put my foot over it when dd uses it. She won't stay in the bathroom while it flushes. She runs. And I don't blame her. The noise still scares me.

Well, I sit, but when I lean forward (like to grab toilet paper or my purse...) or twist to wipe, it flushes. Ewww that water splashing up on me, not cool!!!!

OMGosh, I was using one not too long ago and the darn thing flushed like 3 or 4 times before I was done! Then when I was finished and I stood up, it wouldn't flush. And I couldn't find the darn button. I was hopping all around in front of that thing. Finally I sat back down, with my pants on, and the dang thing flushed. (I did not get my pants wet, thankfully!)

My SIL hangs a long piece of toilet paper over the sensor to accomplish the same thing. It doesn't bother me or my ds so I haven't tried it, but she swears by it.

EXACTLY! It was really difficult for DD to go while we were out because of 1 or 2 bad experiences, and then she was afraid of all toliets for quite a while. Both my kids are wary of the toliets in public restrooms. Even the non-automatic ones, they leave the stall and stand outsite the door while I flush. Why do they have to be so stinkin' loud?

I'm going to have to try the post-it/toliet paper trick.

OMG, just last week at Sportsmans Warehouse and I finally gave in and used the bathroom. I don't usually use public restrooms but I had to pee so bad! I just got into the hover position and started when it flushed, LOUDLY, and scared me, so I stood up and peed in my pants a little. So I waited until it was done that assumed the position again, and what do you know?, it did it again!! I stood up again and peed down my pant leg. It was so gross. I left after that with my bladder still half full.
I have never had trouble with toilets like that either. Maybe because I don't use them much

As the parent of a noise-sensitive child, I've learned a trick for dealing with automatic flushing toilets.

If you still carry a backpack or purse, keep a pad of post-it notes in there. Before you sit down, stick one of the post it notes to the sensor. Then you can do whatever at your leisure, multiple kids can use the potty, ect.

When you're ready for a flush, remove the post-it.

Won't help with flushes on a timer, though.

ETA: oops, I see someone else already shared that trick! IT's a lifesaver though, especially with potty-learning and/or small kids

my ds has such bad memories and hatred of those toilets, that he will no longer go anywhere near a public restroom. which means we have to change his diapers in the car
