I went to Oklahoma State U over a decade ago. There is a famous restaurant called Eskimo Joe's. Their tshirts are also well-known around that area and everyone has them. When I went to OSU I had a few of them myself. Well one day I was looking at the shirt and it struck me that the shirt was probably racist. I did not wear them again after that. Dh recently suprised me by ordering me one as a way to go down memory lane. We met and married in that town but have lived in another state since shortly after our marriage. It was really thoughtful of him to think of our early days and buy me something like that-- on the other hand I'm not sure I want to wear it. What do you think about this logo?

I don't really see anything racist in it, but I voted "not sure" because there have been times when I haven't "seen" racism in a situation and others have (namely individuals of the racial group being disparaged in the situation.)

I wouldn't call it racist, but I would call it somewhat offensive.

It is an offensive caricature. Also, as far as I know eskimo isn't an appropriate way to describe a person or culture.

I go to Joe's quite a bit and have grown up with it and I have
never thought of it as racist nor has anyone that I know
from around here thinks it is either. Wow. This is the first time
I have ever heard anyone say that about Eskimo Joe's.

I think the term became offensive because of its origin which means "eater of raw meat"?

It is definitely not an appropriate term to define a culture or person, but a restaurant? I can't pretend to find it offensive, but I am not inuit or yupik, so dont take my word....

When in doubt, consult Wikipedia!

hideous and possibly offensive: definitely. I know that people do refer to themselves as Eskimo. But I know it's a controversial term and therefore wouldn't use it myself.

The shirt seems like a caricature and there seems to be a racially based dehumanising of the person depicted. So I think it definitely leans towards racist.

The word Eskimo is not racist, its just not "politically correct" in todays language

Its better to say Inuit.

My undergrad is from OSU as well (hey fellow alumns!) and I have always thought the design was ugly but not offensive. I guess because growing up in Oklahoma I just always associated "Eskimo Joes" w/ the restaurant and Inuit with the ppl. Hmmmm.

Cool to see another alum here! Yeah, I didn't think much of it either at the time. It was just Joe's and that was part of Stillwater. When I moved to Phoenix I was wearing my Joe's shirt and a man stared at it and asked where I was from. Not thinking about it, I said I went to college in OK but was from Phoenix. He just walked away. Later the lightbulb went off that he looked native Alaskan (or something) and was probably offended by the shirt. I never wore my Joe's shirts again.

How surprising to open this thread and see Eskimo Joe. Stillwater is my home town. Weird!
Anyway, I think it is probably racist, but it is such a part of the town, it is strange to think of it that way.

I see those shirts EVERYWHERE. Absofreekenlutely everywhere. And I've never even been to OK.

Oh, I vote I don't know. For me it depends on the background and history of the place. I feel comfortable portraying my own culture in many different ways, but if an outsider tries to do that, well, that's treading on thin ice. Do you happen to know the history of the place?

Yeah, that was my thought, that it was based on a stereotype and a term that is considered offensive with some, yet because it is enough of an accepted thing because of it's association with the restaurant, people don't even think they should question it. So that's why it's racist, IMO. Like the Redskins.

I did my grad work at OU, but was very familiar with Eskimo Joe's and OSU. I found it incredibly racist and offensive, especially the caricature. It is unfortunately still acceptable in this country to use grotesque and distorted images of native peoples as logos for ball teams, schools, restaurants, etc, but it doesn't diminish their inherent racism.

I don't know, that is a tough one. I think the illustrators were trying to be cute with the person and the dog in the way they drew the charachters. I don't get the impression that they were trying to be hurtful or negative though towards eskimos.

I think it's OK to acknowledge differences in cultures and different physical charachteristics of different nationalities, but to state that one or the other is better or superior...that obviously is wrong! We're all different, we come in all shapes, colors and belief systems...that is what makes living here in the US so dynamic!

Perpetually breastfeeding or pregnant ENFP mom to a lot of kids...wife to a midwestern nice guy...living in tropical paradise...pink cats and homebirths rock!

I voted "racist" based on the picture. It reminded me of the "black" caricature on early cartoons, the guy with the really big grin.
