I feel shaky. I need to get this out.

I heard a crash, and then went outside to see what it was. A couple of years ago a drunk driver crashed into 5 cars parked on the street.

I went out, and there is an SUV hugging a telephone pole

My neighbors were outside already (I live in a small apartment complex)

I asked the people in the car if they needed an ambulance and they said no.

the man driving and a woman passenger started to get into an argument.

There are several bars around here. I think they had been drinking. I talked to one of my neighbors and we agreed I'd call the police.

When I went out there last, the police were searching the SUV and it was on a tow truck. A woman who said she was another neighbors girlfriend was out there (no idea if she actually is, I've never seen her before) and said that it was her gf's sister in the SUV! the woman I was talking to had obviously been drinking.

The police are still out there. I feel really anxious. I'm not sure if I did the right thing. I'm really glad none of them were hurt.

You did the right thing. Since they had been drinking, they could have had injuries they weren't aware of yet. I know it's hard to do the right thing sometimes.

Calling the police is usually a scary thing to do, but I think you did the right thing. Whether they had been drinking or not, arguing or not, they needed assistance with the vehicle after a crash and you helped get them that assistance.

I guess I feel guilty, because if it was my neighbor's sister.. well.. I don't know. I shouldn't feel guilty. if you've been drinking and get behind the wheel of a car, going to jail shouldn't be a surprise.

DH told me to take some rescue remedy, which helped immensely. I was just so wound up over it.

Exactly.
Still, I know how freaky and shaky anything like that can make you feel.

Listen... do you think that your neighbor would thank you for NOT calling the police tonight if a couple years from now her sister got herself killed in a drunk-driving accident?

Sometimes this sort of thing is a good wake-up call. People are more inclined to wake up, though, when the boys in blue set the alarm for them.

:

I don't care who it is- my own best friend, my own relatives, if I knew that someone was drinking and driving, I'd call the police with no hesitation or regrets.

I called on my partner about a year and a half ago but they didn't go to get him. I told them the route that he would be taking, etc, and no we had not been in a fight. They asked me if I knew the person and I said yes. Their interest ended right there

If people get behind the wheel after drinking, they NEED to have consequences. They are not just endangering themselves, and the behavior tends to continue if nothing happens.

You did the right thing.

My grandmother, aunt, uncle and great aunt were killed by a drunk driver.

I always call when I suspect a drunk driver. if they've been drinking, it's their own fault. if not, they've been doing something stupid on the road and the police will sort it out.

You did the right thing.

My Grandmother (who was 8 1/2 mths pg), Grandfather, Aunt(who was 5mths pg) and 5 yr old Aunt were all killed by a drunk driver.

At least it was just a telephone pole the ruined and not someones lives they ruined.

It is always scary to have to call the police but you did the right thing.

A car accident of any kind... must usually be "written up" by police.

Look at it this way--you called the police, sparing your neighbor the ordeal of calling the police to deal with her own sister. Even without that connection, you did the right thing.

Chasing DS since April 2007 and pumping for DD March 2013.

Even if they were fine and had just gone off the road because of conditions and weren't drinking at all, the police needed to be there to evaluate the condition of the road. If the road was bad enough that a sober driver would run off it, they might need to close the road. If the driver was drunk, the police needed to be there to handle that.

Anyway you look at it, you did the right thing.

When a car gets wrapped around a telephone pole, you call 911. Whether there's alcohol involved or not.

You totally did the right thing-if these people don't experience consequences to their actions, they'll just keep going and eventually someone's loved one will get hurt or die.

It's almost 10 years that we lost my BIL to an alcohol related driving accident. His son no longer has a father, my MIL lost her youngest, and my dh was having issues for a long time afterwards. There is a big hole in their family, and drinking & driving was the cause.
