NO!! You never know what strange things people will do to or in those cars.
But if you do....definitely do that carfax report thing. I've never used it so I don't know how helpful it is but yeah.

I'd be pretty leery of doing so. I can't say that I never would, if it were a VERY good deal I suppose I might, but essentially you're buying a 53701264140478-owner vehicle

No WAY, I remember my husband(when he was my boyfriend and young) driving the crap out of a rental on purpose...

They did everything in their power to destroy them, so no way!

people race them and do all kinds of crazy stuff to the mechanics to test things out so they didn't have to do it to their car.

Yeah, Carfax is actually how I found out it was a rental. But that's pretty much all it said.

Oh and it has leather interior so I could wipe the seats off REALLY well.

Do people really treat rental cars like crap? I wonder why? I guess I never have, so I never really thought about it.

Hmmm definitely some things to consider.

Thanks again.

That's funny because the Carfax report was going on and on about how good it was that the car only had 1 owner. But that owner shared it with half the state.

Yes our last car was a rental.

It came to us with 40,000 KM on it. It was a 2005 and we got it in 2005. Excellent condition...never had a single problem with in the 2 years we had it.

Not a rental, but a corporate lease. 2002 and we bought it in 2002 with 32K miles on it. We had a full carfax report and it even came with the factory warranty still in place! She's around 70K miles now and still working great.

I guess I'd just make sure you are buying from a reputable place. If it's not a company you trust, then no. If it's a good company, then you're probably getting a decent car.

Our current car was a rental. We bought it 1 year old, 19k. We are currently trying to unload it. Think 4 repairs in 1 year and 2 more that need to be done (cosmetic defects). Don't do it!

Yeah, because the optional insurance is cheap. I personally have never treated one like crap but I've known people who have.

I bought one that had been a rental. If you think about it, they get really good maintenance, and are kept very clean after each rental. Mine was really nice, until I wrecked it lol.

Rentals (from reputable companies) are EXTREMELY well-maintained, both cosmetically and mechanically. However, they tend to have very high milage for their age. That's the main downside.

Not sure whether I'd buy one or not... the cars I tend to look for don't tend to be rentals or fleet vehicles much, so I've never had to think hard about it. But I wouldn't rule it out. Sure, some people may be somewhat abusive to a rental car... but then, how long do they have it for? And a lot of people are much *nicer* to a rental than they would be to their own car, so it balances out. ;-)

other than being high miles I don't see a problem with it.

just be sure to have it looked at by a mechanic before you buy it.

ETA: I always treated rentals better than my own car, because I didn't want to be charged some outrageous fee for getting a ding in the fender

My car is a previous rental. I haven't had any problems with it.

When people found out I bought a rental car everyone said "But omg don't you know how people drive rental cars?" And yet when I asked all of them how they treat rental cars, the response was always "just like my own car"

And as for people doing weird things and whatnot in them... Unless you buy a new car there's always that possibility. So what?

No. And the only reason I say this is that I heard the car guys on NPR say that this was a bad idea. For many reasons. But think about what you or people you may know of have done to a rental car. Someone might be really rough on the car engine-wise, or whatever and not with a car they own.

Definitely! It's a GREAT way to buy a car. Those cars are very well maintained, usually low mileage...I would absolutely do it.

No, we just bought a used van because ours was totalled last month.
We got it from a used car dealer and got a carfax report.
We also took it to a dealer and had it inspected.
It was about $95, but well worth it since we would not have bought it if it was a lemon.
The guy at the body shop offered to buy our totalled van and pay us $500 more than the insurance offered us if we would sell it directly to him with a clean title rather than a totalled one. He said he was going to use it himself and not resell it - sure.:
I did not sell it to him because I am sure he would repair and resell it and it would not show that it had been in a wreck.
Anyway, the rental place offered to sell us a van but we did not think we would have gotten as good a deal as we did and we did worry about if it would have problems.

I would from Enterprise..........but I work for them. Yes they do get treated like crap by customers but the company treats them well. They get repairs done by the manufactures NOT joe smoe. They are fixed and fixed right. Reputable rental car companies look out for resale value because they still need to make money off the car that is why they are taken care of.

that's what I have always heard. My car was a rental before I bought it it 2002 (geeze has it been that long ) and it seemed to be very well kept and I haven't had any issues with it yet *knock on wood*, but on the other hand I didn't really know anything about cars and was just happy to get a great deal

My last car was a previous rental, the transmission went out twice within a year and every other thing that could go wrong did. It was a nissan too which is normally a reliable car. If you can find something different -do.

My mom bought a used rental in 1988 and she got rid of it in 2001.

So I think that she would have said to go for it.
