Preferably for mamas with a child or children under the age of 18 still living at home. (This is for statistics homework.. I didn't see anything against the rules doing this!)

I voted "mountains".

But I'm biased, living on Long Island. Don't get me wrong, I *love* the beach, but it's always been pretty much in my backyard, yk? Mountains would be something new.

Now...if I lived more than 60min from the ocean (and I don't see that ever happening, to be honest), I'd have voted beach. Beach towns often have more to do, I think, as far as tourism and whatnot, especially in the summer.

Beach. We're in between the two pretty equally but we prefer the beach for summer vaca trips, which is when we take vaca.

Mountains, but then I also live near the beach, and really dont' enjoy going there. It's too hot out in the sun all day. At least in the mountains it's cooler, breezier, and shadier. That's why there are so many summer camps "upstate"- before air conditioning was invented, people from NYC started summering in the Catskills, and many bungalo colonies and sleepaway camps are still located there. My oldest is in the Catskills right now.

I voted BEACH because I live in the mountains. Well, actually, maybe I want to change my answer. I have the opportunity to go on beach vaca this summer but I'm not going because I love being in the mountains during the summer. It's why I live here!!

I said beach, but, that's because I grew up in the mountains, and we now live in the mountains. I lived near the beach for a few months, and I miss it.

Plus, I think my DD (24mos) would be more easily amused at the beach - we're going to the beach this Sunday, actually (but it's only a lake beach).

Beach. My one mountain vacation was miserable. Also, I live on five acres of woods, so I don't need to see more trees.

I wish city had been an option, because that's really my favorite type of vacation. We just went to Montreal and Quebec, and I have loved previous vacations to San Franisco, Boston and New York.

Foamy white waves, baby otters floating on their backs, a seagull hopping after a seastar, sparkly sand that squishes under your feet, a private bonfire on the beach under a black midnight sky, jetskis and sailboats, fat seals flopping around on the rocks, clam chowder on the pier, ferris wheels on the boardwalk - all good things are at the beach. Now, my question is why do people vacation at places like Disney Land and choose to be surrounded by all that electronic gadgetry and expensive doodads when nothing is as magical as the ocean?

I like the beaches here in Oregon because its cool there and some of them are pretty rocky. I'm not a fan of bright sun and heat though!

Mom of a 7 yr old, 4 yr old, and 1 yr old. Wow. How did that happen?

I like both equally although the mountains usually win over the beach. I prefer the mountains because I can go hiking, biking and do outdoor things that I really love to do. We live on the east coast but we live closer to the mountains than we do the ocean so that helps too.

I like the ocean because my kids want to play on the beach and that's why we go there - but I hate the sticky sand and salt water. I feel dirty the whole time I'm at the beach. I mainly go there for my kids. There was a time when the beach would have been #1 for me, back when I was younger.

I love them both!! I'm pretty sure in most cases I would choose the beach--unless it was the Atlantic side of the US then I would choose the mountains!

Beach. I am not fond of sand on my feet & I have vertigo so it's hard for me to stand on the sand but I love to watch & hear the ocean.

This was a hard one! I voted mountains, cause where I live is flat flat flat, and I LOVED vacationing between Mt. St Helen's & Mt Hood, so did the kids.

We've also loved the Oregon coast, too, though. Beats the heck out of Galveston!

I said beach. I love the beach and the mountains and have lived at/in both (Santa Cruz, CA & Stowe, VT), but prefer the beach for vacations. We just got back from a week in Santa Cruz, so there you go!

We've been to the beach 4 times this month on vacation. Canon Beach, Seaside, Rialto Beach and to the lake. So, I guess the beach. Even though we live less than a mile from one and walk there all the time. I like the mountains too. I don't know, they're both so close to us and we go so often that I don't think of it much as a 'vacation'.
