I don't like Columbus Day. We don't acknowledge it in our house. A very brief explanation can be found here.

I love holidays too though. Let's pick another reason and celebrate that!

Homeschooling, etsy-crafting Mama to spunky DD (12-04) and wife to DH.

~whew~ !

I thought you were asking for a real celebration. Dh and I were trying to explain to 5 yr. old dd why she doesn't have to go to school today.

You beat me to it I waited all day surprised there wasn't a riot.

I was gonna say, so, what did you all do for ColumbASS day? I love this holiday (not).

Keep in mind, every year there are staunch supporters of this touching holiday.

I didn't know it was Columbus Day until I read this thread. I heard someone commenting on a three day weekend, and I thought that it was because of Canadian Thanksgiving, or that I just misunderstood.

I guess that explains the lack of mail.

I stood at the mailbox all confused for like 5 minutes, and finally assumed we didn't get any mail. A few hours later, my mom told me it was Columbus Day, and it all clicked.

I'm bumping this old thread to thank you for sharing this. I requested that my library would buy this CD, and they did! : It's on the way for us to listen to and integrate into our family life.

Thanks!

When my ds1 was younger we played Dave Matthews Band "Don't Drink the Water' in remembrance of Columbus's 2nd voyage. It seemed appropriate and it gave a different view than what the school was telling him about Columbus.

ETA: I realize the song wasn't written about Columbus (or any of the early 'discoverers') but it easily could've been.
