I was having regular contractions yesterday and last night. I woke up to some harder contractions around 6:30am and then my water broke. Yay! The baby is coming!!
Baby Jonas was born about 12:05pm today at home. He was face first, so his poor little face is pretty bruised, but is already looking better. I'll update w/pics and story later!!
On Friday 8/5 I noticed that I had started to have some semi-regular contractions. The were not painful, but were occurring every 4-8 minutes and would last for about 60-90 seconds. I started timing them around 3pm and they continued like this all threw the night. I went to bed and got a regular nights sleep--still was having contractions, but as they were pretty similar to my BH I was able to sleep. DD woke up around 4am and came into our room--we went back to sleep. Around 6:30am DD woke up and wanted to nurse. I nursed her and had a couple of stronger contractions. At this point I got up, went to the bathroom, sent DD downstairs to be with my mom (who had stayed the night). I went back and laid down for a little while and had a couple more stronger contractions--laying down was no longer working. So I got up and did a few things, still having slightly stronger contractions. Then I felt a small gush of liquid after a contraction and went and sat on the toilet. I had a few more small gushes and my contractions got harder and were about 5 minutes apart. I stayed in the bathroom for a while as I kept getting little gushes--I figured my water broke and we called my MW to let her know. I had DP set up the birth tub and when it was ready I got in. A short time after I got in the contractions got harder and I had DP call our MW to come over. I was just getting the urge to push around the time she arrived and started regular pushing shortly after she arrived.
After pushing for a while I started to feel like this was a lot harder than it was with DD. At some point I felt between my legs and could fee the water bag coming out, so it did not completely break earlier and my have just been a small leak. I kept pushing in the tub for a while and was working really hard. I kept feeling like I needed to spread my hips wider--its a good thing I did a lot of squatting during this pregnancy! My midwife then decided that she needed to check how things were going. She checked me in the water and said that she thought the baby was coming face first. She told me that she wanted me to get out of the tub so she could see what was happening better. Just prior to this I had decided that I needed to push this baby out and soon--he was progressing it was just really hard. I did several really strong pushes on my hands and knees just outside of the birth tub and my MW helped to stretch me as I pushed--this actually felt good (sort of). Then I moved over to the carpet in out living room (more comfortable on my knees). I did several more really strong pushes and he started to crown. My MW had me slow down and breath so that I could stretch over him. I did another push or two and felt the burning, she again had me breath and allow myself to stretch then I gave another good push and his head was out!! Then with another push the rest of him came out and he was passed between my legs. I immediately saw that he was a boy and he also started breathing right away. His poor little face was super puffy and his lips were gigantic. DP said it was a little scary seeing him come out, but he and I are doing very well.
My DD and mom were able to watch the birth which was great. DD was super excited to see her brother born and she is ecstatic about seeing him now.
My MW said that she has only had one other face-first presentation and that labor stalled out--resulted in a c-section. She also said that it would probably have been easier to deliver a breech baby. I did a little research and found out that face-first presentation only occur in about .5% or less of all births. I am super glad I was able to deliver Jonas vaginally with out any drugs! And I did not tear at all!!
This one is from right after Jonas was born.
I took an herbal bath with Jonas and floated him in the water. It was really neat to see him relax and stretch out--a couple hours after he was born.
This one is in the evening. A good portion of the swelling had gone down by this point.
