It's funny but some of the more unique names I'm seeing on here are names some of my friends have used.  Like Arwen, I'd never heard it before and now I've heard it twice.  She named her second daughter Ayla (pronounced like Isla), which goes really well with Arwen cause now they're Ar and Ay, kind of funny actually.  Another friend actually named her daughter Sawyer, to me it seemed unusual at first but now I really like it.  We haven't come up with any new names, but get to find out what baby is tomorrow so that will help.  If it's a girl we have a huge list to pick from, if it's a boy we've got nothing, so either way it's going to be tough.

Isn't Arwen from the Lord of the Rings movie?  I think its a nice name, but I think I've heard dh talk about it before.

Ack!  I thought we sucked at coming up with boys names we now suck at girls names too!  We've compiled a small list but aren't totally in love with any of them.  Here's the list, anyone have any better ideas?

Sydney

Ashleigh

Carrie

Kylie

Alyssa

I also like Isabella, a version of my great-grandmother's name, but DH doesn't.

Yep, you got it! She is one of the half-elven living in the Third Age and Aragorn's true love in Tolkien's legendarium.

This is a great thread! We find out if we're having a boy or girl in about two weeks at our 20 week ultrasound, so I really want to have a short list of names ready by then.

If we're having a boy, we already have a solid name chosen - Alexander David. Alexander kind of after the Macedonian king Alexander the Great and also because we like the sound of it. David is my husband's middle name. And we really like the meanings of both names - Alexander means "defender of men" and David means "beloved".

If we're having a girl, we haven't quite decided. Catherine Corrine is on our short list. Catherine for my late Great Grandmother (though she spelled her name with a K) and Corrine for my husband's late Grandmother. And I Iike that we'd be able to call her either Catherine or Cate.

I also like Laura (after Laura Ingalls Wilder - my favorite historical personage/author) but I don't think my husband is so keen on that one. And I like Ruth, after Ruth 3:16 in the Bible - despite the fact that I am not religious, it is my favorite quote. But I don't think husband is keen on Ruth either. So we have lots of debate if we find out we're having a girl!

We actually had this babe's name selected within about 24 hours of the ultrasound that confirmed that the babe was healthy (there was some uncertainty since I was taking medication that can cause birth defects so we had to "wait and see").  This is our fourth and we thought that would make it really tricky but it actually was our fastest naming ever!  LOL

We have a hyphenated last name, and both are long/ethnic so we wanted short first/middle names.  We also wanted names that were unusual but not too "out there"... you know, we played the "can you be Judge X as well as Rocket Scientist X as well as Potter X or Farmer X or Peace Activist X" game.  :)  And then once siblings started arriving we wanted names that sounded good together.

dd1- Laia Anne Yada-Yada

We know several people with similar names, but no other "Laia".  The name is a pet form of "Eulaia" and is apparently really common in Catalonia (patron saint and all).  I'd heard it first as part of an ARG I'd participated in... one of the characters was named Laia and it made our short list of girl names.  The other names on the list were Lyra (a character in a series of books by Patricia McKillip as well as a classic "celtic" mythic name) and Linnea (classic scandinavian name, it's a flower, and there's a cute series of books about a girl named Linnea).  I love the name Hypatia but DH associates it with a porn star so, um, no.  We didn't start the name game till after we knew we were having a girl so we didn't actually have a short list of boy names.

dd2- Rowan Sophia Yada-Yada

We'd actually planned on having Rowan be the middle name with Sophia being our first choice for first name, but one evening we put Rowan first and DH and I both went That's It!  :)  We still liked Lyra and Linnea but felt they were too close to Laia to work, and then close friends used Sophia as a first name and our other short list names (Isabella and River) were also used by friends.  We wanted something "natural", short, and similar in feel to Laia without being too close.  When she was born she was the first Rowan any of the nruses had heard of... but when she was about 8 hours old a nurse rushed in to tell us another little girl had just been born and named Rowan too!  Since then we've met 5 Rowans... three boys and two girls.  We joke that no matter what, our Ro will probably date another Ro at some point.  :)  Her middle name is adapted from my great-aunt's name "Josephine" and a runner up name "Serafine"... Sophia seemed a bit more classic but not too heavy, and it balanced nicely against the more "nature-y" Rowan.  Again we knew she was a girl so we didn't have a list of boy names.

ds1- Torin Salvatore Yada-Yada

So... a boy!  In Dh's family it is traditional for the first boy in each generation to be named "Salvatore".  The tradition held for generations until my MIL decided she wasn't naming /her/ son Salvatore and gave it to DH as a middle name.  So I decided middle was going to be good enough for us too because I just don't love it as a first name, not to mention it's loooooooong and doesn't work with Laia or Rowan.  We do call ds "Tor" or "Tory" which could refer to either his first or middle name so it kind of works out (and dd1 loves Mythbusters and always points out that ds and the actor Tory have the same name).  We had a pretty long list of names and it took ages to narrow it down to Torin... the other finalists were Faolin, Corwin/Corbin, and Lucian.  Our Italian relatives though we chose Torin because it's the dialect name of the city they're from, and our Irish relatives thought it was for the Irish significance so it worked out well for everyone.  And we've only heard about two other Torins (though it isn't an uncommon scandinavian name, and with a slight spelling difference it is a girl's name too)

As yet unknown babe- "unknown" Giovanni/Giovanna Yada-Yada

We don't share the first name till after the babe is born (and since I have family/friends who check MDC I can't post it here!  LOL) but we knew right off the middle name would be Giovanni for a boy or Giovanna for a girl.  My dad is nearing the end of his life, doctors put it at months "maybe less", and we wanted to honor him... his name is John Joseph and while we don't really like either of those names (and weren't too thrilled with Joan or Jo-Anne either)... "behind the name" (my fav name site) suggested Giovanni/Giovanna as a "John/Joseph" option and we did like that sooooo.  We actually have a boy name and a girl name picked out, the boy name is more Irish than Italian, the girl name more balanced between the two, and we'll find out on Friday which one it'll be!

Argh!  i had quite a few boys names on my list, but none that i LOVED.  yesterday one popped into my head that i really thought might be *the* name if this babe is a boy--Kainen.  only today i realized i hadn't figured in that my nephew's name is Kaden.  what do you think--too close?  i would say probably.

I say go for it, if you like it that much. My son's name is Calvin, and he has a cousin named Cavin. We don't see them that often, and none of the family ever gets confused. We're about 80% set on naming this baby Julia, if it's a girl. I have a cousin Julie, but I'm not worried about that, either smile.gif

Yay names!!!!

As part of a family thing we do Ts and Js. It drives my mom crazy, she thinks it is, what did she say last week, "white trashy". :)

Our oldest is Terrick Jaymes, our youngest is Tacen Joel.

We are having a really really hard time with names this time. Usually we have a nice list by now and I hate every name. We don't want common T names either and Thomas/Tommy, Ted, Teresa/Theresa, Timothy, Terry are out as those have already been used.

So, for right now (and I am sure it will change) I like Toren Jireh for a boy and Toryn Jayelle for a girl.

As a side note, our silly nicknames for our boys are Tik and Tac (Tack) so a To would fit right in, but is certainly not a 'must have' :)

We may find out what we are having this time, so that might make it easier.

I saw an episode of a Baby Story yesterday where they named their little girl Aiden(not sure of spelling) and that is the FIRST time I have ever heard of a girl being named that except my DD! (Aden). It said in the baby name book that it was a boy or girl name but I haven't seen any other girls named that.

Anyways, I am definitely wearing DH down on Phoebe. I still like Rowan too but he says it sounds too much like a boys name? (DD isn't his bio child so he didn't have a hand in naming her lol).

I think Phoebe Rowena sounds nice together :D

As a mama to a "girl Rowan"... the name's gender orientation is funky.  It's most likely from an old Irish male name meaning "little red" (Ruan).  Then a plant with little red berries was also named Rowan.  So originally it was a guy's name that was also used for a tree.

Then during the Victorian age there was a fad for girls to be named after "natural things"... names like Iris, Daisy, Rose, Violet, etc.  And the Rowan Tree was one of the plants that got adopted as a girl's name.  So at that point it was either an "old fashioned boy" (most likely an old fashioned Irish boy), a plant, or a "modern" young woman (most likey an English young woman of a specific social class).  And then it's sort of gone from there... I think there are probably more famous "boy Rowans" at the moment, but the name is closer to the 50/50 mark these days in terms of gender in the US.

We FINALLY settled on a name... Matthew Chelais. The second name is pronounced like Elias, but it is a Palauan name meaning "fish net" or "string of fish"... as DP is Palauan.

Moo.

Help!  i have too many girls' names on my list.  and none of them are really jumping out at me as "the one."  i'm thinking i am leaning towards Violet, but i just can't decide.  i still have to let Ty go through the list and see what he thinks, but i'd at least like to narrow it down a bit more first.  with middle names, I like Jolene, because it is a combination of both our mothers' names--Joanne and Darlene--and I also like Wynn for a middle name.  my other kids are Jasmyn and Grayson, but i'm not fussy about name matchiness.  anyways, let me know what you think, the list is in the link below.  feel free to vote or just tell me which ones you like/don't like.  i know it's a personal decision, but i just can't decide!
