I'm just 5w5d pregnant and started bleeding today at noon.  I normally wear tampons, so it's hard to judge from a pad how heavy it is, but I'd estimate it's about like a period.  Anyone else, especially in previous pregnancies or m/c, have an experience like this?  From what the doctor said and what I read it could still go either way, but I sure have a sinking feeling.  :(

(We are having a rare snow today here, but hopefully tomorrow my doctor will be open and I can get some more definitive answers.)

Thanks,

Dana

Oh, I'm so sorry. Is it fresh and red looking?  That would definitely have me extremely worried.  Is there any aching or cramping?  I don't know if there usually is at your early stage of pregnancy, but it's another thing to consider.

FWIW, with my 2nd pregnancy I had heavy bleeding at 13 weeks.  Gushing, fresh and red, for 15 minutes or so, and slowly tapering off over the next day.  An ultrasound showed my baby was just fine, and he was born full-term and healthy.  My midwife, upon examining my placenta at birth, found a small spot that *may* have been the source of the bleeding at 13 weeks.  That's our best guess at what caused the bleeding.  So... bleeding doesn't *always* mean a miscarriage.  I hope and pray your baby will stick!

First off (HUGS). I experienced bleeding at 6 weeks and miscarried. While it was happening I was reading here and in books that bleeding is very common and doesn't always mean miscarriage though. Just wasn't the case for me. Wishing you the best possible outcome.

Thank you!  I'm trying to stay hopeful, but yes, it's very fresh and red and scary.  It's been consistent for about 9 hours now.  I've found other examples online of this happening and the baby sticking, but my friend who miscarried said this is how hers started.   :(

I'm so sorry to hear about the bleeding.  There is what is called a threatened miscarriage, and bleeding can be an indication.  Especially since you have a snow day, get yourself in bed, off your feet, and rest for as long as you can.  And no intercourse, and definitely wear a pad, not a tampon.  There are some herbs you can take too, but you would have to consult with a midwife or herbalist first, probably.  If you have Red Raspberry Leaf Tea, that is a good one. However, in the meantime, putting yourself on bedrest can be good for your body, and psychologically very important too, because it allows you to honor the baby and do something.  When your doctor is open, you'll probably have an ultrasound.

A few other thoughts about bleeding.  The cervix is extremely friable, meaning that it can easily be disturbed if it is bumped (as in, sex).  Obviously, the worst outcome of bleeding in the first trimester is a threatened or actual miscarriage, but most commonly it is caused by intercourse the night before.  To put bleeding in perspective, 25-30% of all pregnant women experience some bleeding, and only 25-30% of women who bleed go on to miscarry.  90% of women who experience first trimester bleeding who have verification of a live baby will carry the baby to viablilty.

I know how stressed you must feel, but as best as you can, try to rest and relax.  We are thinking of you and sending good thoughts your way.  Huge hug to you.

praying and sending you sticky vibes!

I had a miscarriage last june-the bleeding was much heavier than a period. I had to go to the ER because I was losing so much.

I know that isn't the happiest story, but just letting you know that when I miscarried the bleeding was much worse than what you describe.

Hugs!

Thanks so much for all the thoughts.  Unfortunately, I did lose baby.  It was very early and luckily the miscarriage was nothing more than what a period would have been -- I didn't even have cramping and a small clot was all I passed.  I'm thankful we were able to celebrate the life while it was here.  My husband and I went out to a nice dinner (out daughter with a babysitter) last night to process our loss and remember the precious life, and we're spending the weekend as a family at an ocean cabin to appreciate what we do have.

We're hopeful for a pregnancy in the near future.  I took 16 months to conceive my daughter, so at the very least I know I've been ovulating.

Happy pregnancies to you all!

Dana <3
