sorry if this has been discussed before, but anyone particularly like one of the babyname sites? I remember someone once describing one that can even show geographic differences in name popularity... starting to think of names I guess and I'd like a sense of what they mean, how popular they are, etc.

You may be thinking of the Baby Name section on the SS site: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/OACT/babynames/
I check www.behindthename.com for true meanings for any name I'm thinking about.
I love making a home for my man in uniform and my children.

I like nymbler.com as well, and also behindthename.com. Behindthename has a comments secion for the names, so people with that name can write about their experiences with the name (like mispronounciation issues, childhood teasing, etc). I've found that useful this time, as we're considering a few different spellings of a name.
I second the recommendation for http://www.babynamewizard.com/ - even if you just use the free version, you can get a lot of good info (including people's personal comments/experiences with the name) - and there is information on the name's popularity in different states and countries, too.
You get a few more features if you subscribe, I think, but it isn't necessary at all.
