I've been so hungry the past two days!  I don't remember this coming up this early with my first.  Is it just in my head?

MadHghtsMama's Avatar MadHghtsMama 05:03 AM 02-28-2011

Ive definitely been hungrier too especially on the days Ive gone for a run this week. Ive had some dizzy spells already too.

xakana's Avatar xakana 01:29 PM 02-28-2011

I got hit with it a few days before my BFP.

Summersquash's Avatar Summersquash 07:24 AM 03-01-2011

I don't know if I'm hungrier, but definitely hungry for different food.  For whatever reason my body really wants protein.  Usually I really love bread and carbs but right now they don't appeal to me at all.  Over the weekend I baked some chicken thighs and I have them in the fridge to eat for lunches this week - yum!

MadHghtsMama's Avatar MadHghtsMama 07:39 AM 03-01-2011

Im having a really hard time controlling the carbs. It's all my body wants right now!

xakana's Avatar xakana 11:37 AM 03-01-2011

Remember ladies: we aren't supposed to be dieting! If you want carbs, eat them. Eat protein that sounds good with them to maintain blood sugar, but remember that your body needs 195 carbs a day if you're DIABETIC and even more if you're not. It's most important to space them (the diabetic pattern is 45, 15, 60, 15, 45, 15--then varies by individual blood sugar reactions) Pregnant women need around 150g-180g of protein a day for good placental healthy.

Also, water--drink a bunch of water every time you think you're hungry. If you're still hungry, eat. Thirst sometimes feels like hunger, especially in pregnancy when we need more water than usual to accommodate the increasing blood volume in our bodies.

Of course, I'm coming as someone who's followed my bodies cues and never gained weight during pregnancy (I lost during my first) so I'm obviously starting out heavy :( but these are the dietary recommendations for a woman of any weight during pregnancy. Find the healthiest option for what your body is craving (such as fruit for carbs, nuts or lean meat for protein). Dark chocolate with a high cacao count is supposed to help decrease the overall risk of pre-E, etc. so having a piece a day is good for you, too ;) (it also strengthens tooth enamel and improves cardiac function... it's been labeled a superfood recently).

Try not to feel bad about what your body is craving. Oh, and toss out any gender associations. With my first, I was all over fruits and girly things--had a girl. With my second, it was meats and boy things... had another girl ;) who happens to be a huge meat lover.

MadHghtsMama's Avatar MadHghtsMama 03:53 PM 03-01-2011

My body is only asking for the bad stuff. It thinks fruit is gross and that carbs only come in the form of bagels, sandwiches and pasta. I wont be listening to my body anytime soon haha.

xakana's Avatar xakana 02:39 PM 03-03-2011

Whole grain bagels, sandwiches and pasta are all good, healthy foods. Not if eaten exclusively, but as the necessary daily grains in diet.

My body doesn't want anything. At all. I have to force food down and it never, ever tastes good. =( But at least since I'm not craving anything, I can shove all the good stuff down! But I'm a really picky eater, so I can't wait for the cravings to help me FINALLY expand my food horizon.

I'm really hungry today for salsa. If I could just eat it with a spoon I think I'd be happy :)

xakana's Avatar xakana 08:17 PM 03-04-2011

Oh, Nicole, how rough! I hate when nothing sounds good. I tend to sulk. I have more aversions than cravings, too.

I ate some fresh salsa with a spoon yesterday. It made me very happy, but the heartburn did not.

I've been really hungry lately. Last night we went out to eat, i had chicken tortilla soup and then since my son claimed he was done finished his mac and cheese that he barely ate and the side of oranges that came with it.

xakana's Avatar xakana 07:25 PM 03-06-2011

Yeah, not loving the heartburn that I get from EVERYTHING. Spicy food? check. Mild food? check. Everything in between? check.

MadHghtsMama's Avatar MadHghtsMama 05:11 PM 03-08-2011

Im getting heartburn from everything too so Ive avoided the spicy stuff today. I get heartburn everytime I bend over too, not just after I eat! I really dont remember having this much heartburn until late in my other pregnancies.

I'm craving Annie's Goddess Dressing like crazy. Haven't had it in years... prefer to do vinaigrettes to limit calories. I'm practically drinking Goddess dressing now. It goes on everything I eat!

Now it's been fish. Normally I can eat fish maybe once a week, then I'm sick of it (not good w/a freezer full of salmon & halibut!) but lately I want fish all the time. Salmon for dinner on Monday, tuna for lunch on Tuesday, salmon patties for dinner on Tuesday... and this morning I really was wishing I'd saved some salmon patties for breakfast! I'm not worried about the mercury in the fish thing - salmon & tuna are low-mercury fish anyhow and I know that MS will likely come soon and put an end to my fish frenzy! smile.gif

MadHghtsMama's Avatar MadHghtsMama 05:44 PM 03-09-2011

I just devoured four homemade tacos with lots of fresh salsa. I couldnt avoid the spicy stuff for long.

berry987's Avatar berry987 08:09 PM 03-11-2011

I ate two big salads for lunch today - spring lettuce with these crusted, spicy tilapia filets (2 filets on each salad). I had one salad at 12:30 and another at 2:30. And I wanted another an hour later but made myself stop so I would be able to eat dinner. Even writing this right now I'm thinking about those tilapia filets in the freezer. And normally I'm really not a big fish eater.

Just chiming in to say how HUNGRY I am too!  DH thinks it's all in my head, but I know that a growling stomach is a growling stomach.  And fish sounds sooooooooo good right now!  Xakana, thanks for your advice, very doable and balanced.

CDsMom1031's Avatar CDsMom1031 11:23 PM 03-15-2011

My DH thinks that same thing, too! It makes me so mad that he thinks I'm lying about constantly needing to shove food into my mouth! LOL!

I am having endless naseau, as I have with all of my pregnancies, the difference this time? I feel like eating will take away the naseau.  Each of my past pregnancies, it was all I could do to eat anything during the first four months or so.  This time, I just want to eat and eat and eat.  I am making myself drink water before I eat anything to make sure that I'm getting enough water and not just stuffing my face endlessly!

Abraisme's Avatar Abraisme 08:36 AM 03-16-2011

Hungry, check..  THIRSTY, YES!  Geesh, I never thought I could drink so much water!  I'm also breastfeeding, which just doubles up the water intake need.  Drink, pee, drink, pee..  Fun times!  :)

ETA:  I'm also one of those people that eats healthy and follows my body's cues while I'm pregnant.  So far I've gained nearly 50lbs with both of my previous pregnancies!  Luckily breastfeeding takes it off, but man, some people just pack on EVER, SINGLE calorie when they're pregnant and some people don't.

ME SO HUNGRY!!!  And I'm kinda sad b/c I wanted to lose like 30 pounds before getting pregnant.  Oh well...  :D

nj's_mom's Avatar nj's_mom 09:11 PM 03-19-2011

I did, too. I'm starting out about twenty pounds over where I'd like to be (still within "normal" BMI though). But with DD, nursing took off all of my pregnancy weight (like 45 pounds) plus ten or fifteen pounds, so I'm holding on to hope..

I'm hungry too! And somehow we've run out of chocolate. Oh, the horror!!!

For those of you with heartburn issues: I had a lot of heartburn with my first and was able to calm it down by drinking a shot of apple cider vinegar. Sounds gross, but I like vinegar anyway and it really worked for me. :)

This is how I was with my second but this time I want to eat everything in sight.  It is a good thing I was home alone while the kids were sleeping last night because I would have been at the store getting junk food I don't need.  lol

I am sad about this too.  I started running and eating better a couple months ago and lost 17 pounds but I have a lot more to go.  Oh well.  Our kids will be grown before we know it and we will have all the time in the world :)

Ugh... I can no longer tell hunger apart from nausea! I knew it was coming.

xakana's Avatar xakana 07:06 AM 03-23-2011

I'm having the nausea as hunger lately and it's driving me nuts. Of course, I'm starving right now, but all I want is things like cereal, that we don't have any right now :( I'm so hungry... (I can't drive, so I'm stuck here with nothing I can stand to eat)
