Hi all,

I do not have any foster or adopted children, so I'm hoping for some advice about whether it's appropriate to give some sort of gift for adoption. Some friends of mine will be legally adopting a child they've been fostering since birth. The child will soon be two years old. We've been invited to the courtroom to witness the legal proceedings. I generally don't go overboard on gifts, but I want to do something special to recognize this big day for them. What is appropriate and what gifts have really meant a lot to you, if you received them in this circumstance?

Thanks!

I am not an adoptive mother, but I think that's totally appropriate! I sent gifts to my nephew when my sister adopted him, just some age-appropriate toys (he was 9 mos) and a couple of books.

Thank you. And, anything for the parents? I think that was more my question. I was thinking about a gift certificate for the family to go out for ice cream or something, but was worried it might be cheesy or chinzy or something.

I think any gift is a lovely gesture.

A nice gift would be a frame with the date engraved on it. Then they could put their favorite photo of the day in it. I also like the idea of the gift certificate for a family activity like going out for ice cream.

I'm sure any gift would be wonderful - what a special thing to be invited to share in!

A gift certificate to get a new family photo taken? Or you could give them the frame as the PP said and take a picture of them yourself to be put in it later.

I usually get some sort of little indulgence thing like a really nice shower gel/moisturiser type thing for new mothers. Never sure what to give new fathers though.

For babies I usually get a really nice hardcover copy of a classic children's book.

I think that would be a nice thing. You can never have to much ice cream!

DS was adopted at the age of 2 and his DHHS worker made him a Build a Bear teddy named Nigel. I think that was a great gift because you can keep it forever, she had fun making it and he still enjoys playing with him.

Ice cream is good too =)

How about a book signed by the judge and everyone who is there that day? I like The Family Book by Todd Parr. It's better than his Adoption Book.

Thanks for your comments! I attended the adoption ceremony today and it was really special. I decided to do the "go out for ice cream" idea since one of my themes this year has been to give gifts that are not "things" or at least not "new things".

Thanks again!
