Greetings mamas! My name is Jen & I am a long-time Mothering reader & subscriber, alternative schooler, homebirther, mama to three boys (12, 10, 5), and pregnant with baby #4 due in December.

I am also a doctoral level researcher, and my work involves collecting stories of profound, spiritual, life-altering events that happen during childbirth - those moments when angels were there to support you, you felt the life-force of your ancestors, you embraced your own power in a new way, etc. I am collecting mini-stories through an online survey, and will later be doing about 20 in-depth interviews with mamas across the country.

The only requirements are that the mamas 1. live in the US; 2. have given birth in the last year, and 3. have a story to share! The survey only takes a few moments to complete, and can be found here:

www.surveymonkey.com/s/spiritualbirth

I would greatly appreciate any support in getting this survey out into the world.  Eventually, this research will be published as a dissertation and then as a trade book. My goal is to have women everywhere realize the opportunity for growth & transformation that birth can be.

Blessings,

Jen

Do I really need to have felt angels on my side, united with my ancestors or a mystical tie to "ALL THE HUMANS THAT HAVE LIVED ON THE EARTH EVER!!! when I give birth ?

Isn't giving birth -- giving life to another small person -- special enough, transformational enough, just as it is?

I support homebirth that meets the qualifications set forth in the AAP's 2013 policy on homebirth.

I see this as one of the less pleasant sequalae to the impact of the baby boom generation.

Suddenly, its not enough to have a game of catch with your Dad.   Instead the game of catch has to be layered with all sorts of DEEP meanings, symbols and must sum up the purpose of your existence on Earth...

I'm afraid I don't think birth needs a "Field of Dreams" treatment.  "If you build it, they will push!"

I think that's a fascinating thing to be researching, I'm sure you will get some positive responses here. Birth was definitely an empowering experience for me, but those births were several years ago now. Good luck!

Of course you don't. Of course it is. smile.gif But some people feel and experience birth in a very profound way that make them feel the presence of angels, uniting with ancestors and mystical ties. If you don't experience any of that, that doesn't lessen your birth experience in any way. Perhaps the transformation you experience is exactly the kind of story she's looking for. But if you don't feel birth hass or needs to have deep meaning - that's fine and everyone will respect that. Just respect that others do feel something deeply transformational and their stories can be very powerful and meaningful for others to read.
