On December 5, 2006, 17 days before his due date, Gabriel Don was born! He weighed 6lbs 7oz and was 19 inches long.
He was born on the same day as his cousin (my sister's baby girl) in Holland!
I called my sister early in the morning and she told me she had been in labor all night. I hung up around 7:05am and at 7:07am I had my first contraction!
At first I didn't think it was the real thing and that they had to be 'sympathy pains' or something. Or just another cramp due to the exam the midwife had performed the day before, just a little more painful. I had another contraction about 20 minutes later, and then another 20 minutes...then 15...and then they started coming about 7 minutes apart. By then I realized this could be the real thing and I called my husband and our midwife to tell them today might be the day!
I spent most of the morning on the phone, talking to my mom, sisters and a friend. My friend ended up coming over later in the morning so I wouldn't be alone. The contractions weren't that bad, kinda like bad period cramps except I got a break! But I was a little scared of what was to come.
The midwife came over around lunchtime and when she checked me, I was 5-6 cm dilated (I was already 2-3 cm dilated the day before).
After a while, the contractions started to get worse and after about an hour of that I decided to lie down on the bed (I had been walking around the whole time). The second contraction I had on the bed, I suddenly felt my uterus pushing! I told my friend to go get the midwife, who was outside blowing up the tub for the waterbirth. She checked me again and I was 8 cm. She said there was no way we had time to finish the tub for the waterbirth, which was fine with me, I was pretty comfortable on the bed.
They called my husband, who was on his way home, and told him to hurry up! He finally got home around 3pm. A few minutes later I got a phonecall from my sister, telling me my niece had been born! About 10 minutes after that I was 10 cm and started pushing. I really didn't have to do much, my body just took over and pushed! After only 21 minutes of pushing, Gabriel was born at 3:37pm. It was just amazing to finally see him and hold him!
Unfortunately I lost a lot of blood afterwards because my uterus just kind of stopped contracting after he was born. It wasn't bad enough to go to the hospital, but it did take me a few weeks to recover from that, I was just totally exhausted! Luckily my mom was able to come over from Holland for a week to help out! My parents and brother will be visiting again next week and staying for 2 whole weeks
I am so glad I had a home birth, I was able to do what I wanted the whole time. I felt very comfortable and relaxed the whole time and labor wasn't as bad as I thought it would be! And it was great to be able to spend the first night with Gabriel in our own bed

He weighed 11lbs 13oz last Saturday so by now he's about twice his birth weight! He is a really sweet baby and he doesn't cry much. He still wakes up about every 3 hours at night so that's hard but I got used to the lack of sleep
He's getting so smart! He'll smile at us and he'll try to talk, which is really funny! He's just more than we could have hoped for!
