Hi I am new to the community and need your help, I am 8 weeks pregnant with my first child, I take prenatal yoga and when i reach 13 weeks I would begin going to teh Le Leche League in my area for breast feeding and I wanted to go to a birthing center but there are none in St. Louis because midwives are illegal and I can't have a home birth because (you guessed it) midwives are illegal, I have been researching birthing options and let me tell you hospitals SCARE me, after watching TLC, and DHC and seeing the way they rush through everything and their favorite words are INDUCE, EPIDURAL, C-SECTION etc. If you have any advice it would be greatly appreciated.
p.s. there is a birthing center in Columbia but it is hours away and I would have to go for prenatal visits and etc.:

I would suggest you post this question in the MO Finding Your Tribe. I suspect you'll get some good advice from there. Sorry I have no direct help for you.

Is it legal in Illinois?

My midwife worked in Kansas, but since we lived on the MO side of the state line, she was only at our birth "as moral support" (wink, wink).

I would check in the other thread to see what other st. louis mamas did.

Same legal crap in IL too
But of course if you really want a nice natural HB help is probably closer than you think
I found my help right here on the boards
I'm sure the tribal areas will prove most helpful for you!

ETA:
friendsofmomidwives would be a very helpful sight for you too

It's unlicensed here too but there are a few who do it anyway. Ask about training, experience, and references (and their philosophy, typical actions, statistics, etc) and make your own judgement. They risk legal problems, you the client don't.

You might also want to post on the UC (unassisted childbirth) thread if you are comfortable with doing it without a midwife.

Circ doesn't work! Stop the violence of circumcison. Had another UP/UC/HB in August!
