Thanks for the story! I had to laugh a bit because I had my two children BEFORE I became a CBE and Doula, and I always thought "If only I could have one more birth - now that I know how to do it." I even thought about being a surrogate. Your story made me realize that what we always tell our clients/students is true - You can't control birth. And here I was thinking I could have a perfect birth because of all my knowledge. Hah! I'm laughing at myself! Thanks again.

I asked Jamin to wait so that I could talk to the baby first and I told her that we were going to cut her cord since she didn’t need it anymore. This made me choke up and cry.

This part made me cry... a lot. But I am due in 2 days for a water homebirth so I am way emotional! That was so sweet of you to tell her that she doesnt need the cord anymore, I am going to make sure to do that!

Thank you so much for this. I am also a doula and have been thinking about what giving birth will be like for years and years. I am always afraid that my training will get in the way! I know that it might not be what I picture but like you said, the important part is that it will be at home and we will have patient caregivers and be respected. Good idea to turn the phones off. Sounds like you couldn't have done the pp period any better! What a good man you have!

Congratulations!

Jamie, DW to Jeff, birth and postpartum doula and Hypnobabies instructor.
4 years and 5 IVF cycles in the making, Elliott was born at home in water on 2/2/11.
