Dh thinks he is set on a boys name (after his brother).  I love the name, but can't quite commit to it.

For girls we have a list of about 100, but only 5 or 6 serious ones.  We gave our DD a beautiful and slightly uncommon name....so I want the next (especially if it's a girl) to have a similar name.

We've been looking at names unofficially for years, and haven't been able to decide on ones. I'm nervous that now we're on a timeline!

We've had a boy name and a girl name picked out since right after DD was born. I LOVE our girl name, and I still really like our boy name but if we can find another boy name that we both like, we might switch it. We always pick names we like for the first name and then use a family name for the middle name. DD's name is Lucy Josephine. My paternal grandmother was named Mary Josephine but she went by Josey or Josephine and I called her Grandma Jo.

I spend so so so much time searching for names reguardless of whether or not I'm pregnant... It's kind of a hobby. I have a feeling this baby's name won't be finalized until his/her birth though. I'm thinking about chosing to not find out the sex too, but I don't know if I can really stand to do that. :) I have a few front runners, but they could easily change! I also have to decide whether or not to continue 2 different themes that we have going with our other 2 kids' names...

Searching for names is a hobby of mine too :) I would love to have the will power to not find out the sex, but there is no way. I want to know as soon as possible!

We also had our names picked out ~2 years ago!

We didn't find out sex ahead of time for our first two... I can't decide about this one, though.  I may cave and want to know ahead of time - since this will be our last baby.  See if it's any different knowing ahead of time. :) But if we found out gender, I'm pretty sure we would keep it from everyone else!  People wouldn't think anything of us not finding out sex since we didn't previously, and from the other side I do think it's more exciting for family and friends if you don't know ahead of time what the gender (and name) is going to be.  I don't know why, but I just can't get as excited about a friend's baby being born when I've already known for months that his name is XX, or whatever. :)  But from the parent side, I can totally understand why you'd want to know.  In fact, usually at 20 weeks I don't want to know, but my 35 I'm dying to know and kicking myself for not having found out before!

Well, this is baby #8 for us, and the last one. :( Kind of a bitter-sweet pregnancy, but I am going to cherish every moment. All of our kids have names that start with "BR".  We've got: Briar, Brieanna, Braeden, Bruce, Brooklynne, Broderick, and Brittyn-Rayne. Since this is our last babe I kind of want to break tradition and go with a different letter, but DH is wanting to stick to our "tradition". I told him I think we may have run out of names lol. :)  I guess I am fine with another "B" name though. Since this is our last baby we are not finding out the gender until the birthday (Plus we are doing UP/UC). I always felt pressured with my other babes to know their gender and have a name all picked out before they arrived; I think it helped me with the bonding process. I am feeling a lot more zen this time around. I just "knew" that I was pregnant one day, and things have been very mellow and relaxed. I really want to keep that flow if at all possible. I feel very led to just let this baby grow and when he/she arrives decide on a name after getting to know them a little bit.

natbabe likes this.

I'm beginning to research names.  DH and I have very different preferences, so it takes a while. :)

We have a very strongly German last name, but my background is Welsh and Scottish, and I like to keep the names in that direction. I like older names, he likes newer names. I like softer sounding names, he likes strong names.

It's a process.

Yeah that! I feel like, how can you name someone you don't know yet (aside from those uterine flips and such)? I think we'll have several picked out, and then meet our little person, and see which one fits. Also, I definitely don't want to tell family and friends our names until it's born.

That said, DH likes Rowan, which I think is quite cute?

What's everyone doing for last names? I kept mine when we married, and I think our baby will have a first name, middle name, then my last name, DH's last name, no hyphens, just two last names. No particular reason for the order except that it sounds best.

I hyphenate my last name, but the kids have DH's last name.  Everyone knows me as Mrs. Husband'sLastName.  For a while I tried to correct it, but it got complicated.

My oldest has a different last name (her bio father's) but it will be changed in a few months, and she will choose the name she wants as her own.

We had picked out a tentative first & middle name for a potential girl pre-conception but I suddenly went off of it after conceiving. We thought we'd never be able to agree on a boy's name. I found a free baby name app for my iphone, it let's you search and save names and input your own as well. After a few days of playing with it I had a pretty concise list of boy names. I mentioned them to my husband today, and he surprised me by saying one was the name of his late grandfather (who I never met, his grandmother remarried many years ago) and so he loved the idea of it, and the other that was my favorite he thought he liked to. He immediately put the two together and said "so you think we're having a boy too don't you". I was really surprised to hear him say it, but it did make me feel like maybe this little one is guiding us to who he or she may already be becoming. I've always always thought I'd have two girls, so I'm a little blown away at the sudden concept of maybe a boy.

When we get married I will hyphenate, and our children will have hyphenated names too. My older 2 have X's last name

I kept my last name too and like the idea of two last names, without a hyphen. Same reasoning of using mine first, it just sounds better. Still, I think there will come a day when it means mine will be relegated to a middle name or disappear. I've heard from some friends that already have kids and didn't change names after getting married, that it was a lot easier having official documents with both parents names on them just so it was clear without questioning that they were the legal parent, and not a random friend of the family or a stranger without rights altogether.

Azadahhast- My sister is Rowan, and several of my girlfriends have children (male and female) named Rowan...I like it too !

Last names- I don't know lol...I am old fashioned and took my hubby's name.

Baby names- We have just started thinking about it. We had Olivia Estelle saved sense we have had 2 boys, but, they are Juan (John) Carlos, and Caleb Nathanial, which are fairly strong Biblical names (intentionally so) and also family names from both sides; so I am leaning towards keeping a similar theme for girl names now, which puts us back to square one! I really like Naomi Ruth for a girl (MIL is Ruth) and I like Daniel something for a boy (My bro is Sean Daniel), but, DH doesn't like Daniel lol...I also like Elizabeth something for a girl (I have a cousin Eliza) and I like Seth for a boy, except I have a  bro named Seth Caleb, so we really can't go that strongly after him lol...thats not fair to the rest of the family (even though he is possibly my closest sibling - shhh don't tell)! I also like Noah for a boy...not a family name, I just like it - but, DH says it is too much to live up to as far as Bibilical goes lol (I feel names hold a lot of meaning, so to me that just means he will do great things!) I like James a lot too....that is not family either....who knows! I love the name hunting though! Its fun!

So you can see....we will  be lucky to find names before this baby is born! I really hope we can come up with them before the gender determining ultrasound though, I like when they write the baby's name on it with the arrow pointing at the genetals lol...silly, I know...

I had a very clear dream about naming the baby (if it is a girl) and DH loved the name as much as I did.  It's the first time I've felt a name click so early in the pregnancy- but if we have a girl she will be Piper.

well we have had our boy name picked out since before we named our first daugther (we have 2 little girls with very feminine, slightly oldfashioned flowery names:) but we are at a complete loss about a girl name...i would love to hear any suggestions from others, especially with an herbal/flowery theme....my dd's are  Rosemary Dawn and Bethany Lily and so we would sort of like to continue the "theme" but we cant agree on anything yet:) but we have plenty of time! i like Sage, but my husband says no way:)

Violet is the name that stuck out most.. it's a flower, classic, and slightly old-fashioned (but coming back into popularity)... Rosemary, Bethany, & Violet would be a great together!

There's also, Poppy, Myrtle, Sharon, Heather, Daisy, Dahlia, Alyssa, Clover, Ivy, May, or Jasmine

If mine is a little girl (which we think it will be), her name is Iris- which also goes with your theme.

(Bolds are the ones I think would go best with your other girls' names)

Violet i like, in fact, as i remember i think that was thrown around as a possiblity for my first dd. maybe we will have to consider that one again. we also discussed Lavender, but i dont think either of us really liked it that much. we dont write our names down and so i tend to forget what we have discussed....i do like Jasemine as well, but my dh does not. i never thought of Ivy or May, but i like both of those too and i think my dh may at least consider them as middle names:) thank you for the ideas!

Mamas, when do you start talking seriously about names? We're just joking now, and still, it feels too soon to be serious, it being the first trimester. I think we'll have a short list of 4 or so names we agree on, and pick from it once the babe arrives.

Anyone plan to keep your chosen name(s) a secret from family/friends until your little one is born? I think I'd like to, just for the surprise element, but silly DH thinks it's blocking people our of our lives. I'll get my way though, if I want it!

What about multiple middle names, any opinions? I like the idea, mostly for fun and to be different, but we're already using two last names...maybe it'll be saddling the poor child with too much. Actually, what's the point of middle names anyway? What role do they serve?

I've had my daughters name picked out for years. I don't have a daughter, so I think you can pick a name when you want.

I do not reveal names until the baby is born and it is official because I don't want feedback or commentary. People always have to say something negative. But if it's already decided, people will be less likely to think you are asking for their opinion.

Plus, if you already tell the gender, then the name...it kind of takes away a bit. Yes a baby is exciting by itself, but still. It's not as exciting when you know everything upfront. It's more exciting to get the call and find out the gender and then the name of the baby who was just born. JMO.

We had our baby's names picked out before conception :) Never too early, IMO.

I didn't keep my other 2 secret last time.. I wanted to this time, but since my 4yo knows the name it might be hard, since he blurts it out, lol.

I think multiple middle names is fine.. I would probably not do it with 2 last names, but if you have 2 middle names you love, I don't see why not!

I dread picking out names.  The first was easy since I'd had it picked out since 8th grade and DH liked it, too.  Everything else has been hard.  We have 4 girls, and if this is another girl (I will be shocked if it is a boy) then I don't want her to get 5th best, you know?

It's never too early.  I think you need to test them out in your head in a million situations.  DO NOT tell anyone IRL, though, because everyone will weigh in and you just should accept that there is NO name everyone will like.  Just pick one you like!

I have a terrible time commiting to boys names, I think because I was carrying girls the last 2 times....With this one, I really feel like it's suppose to be some sort of "paul" after DH's grandfather, and I really like Issac...so probably Issac Paul and if he's born on Christmas then I really think he should be David Paul. But my older brothers name is David and my DH would definetely not go for that;. Not that I think I'm going to go early anyways. Girls names I'm not feeling, although, I really like Ashley (or Ashlee, or Ashleigh) but I already have an Allyson so probably not.

We have a boy name (same one we would have used for our dd if she'd been a boy) and have a list of two or three girl names. We don't find out the sex until birth so we have a while to whittle it down. :)

I was like that too, with my first two.. Boys names were super easy, but had a hard time with girls names.. this time I am committed to a girls name (and now a boys name, but it was much easier to settle on a girl's name).

Also, with my first 2, I knew their name right before they were conceived (boys names), and before this one was conceived the name came to me again (a girl's name) right before, which further makes me believe s/he's a girl.
