I have a serious sleep problem. I have a 3 yr old. I have recently night weened her because I thought that would help. It does a bit. But I wake up over and over, even if I am not sleeping with her. Sometimes it feels like something wakes me up usually  sound or smell. At other times it is like I am sucked out of deep sleep often in the middle of a dream. I think some is anxiety and just being a light sleeper. I have tried valerian, occ. mag or calcium, chamomile tea (but tea t bed makes me wake up to use bathroom). I am trying to get pregnant/or possibly pregnant so some herbs I don't take. But my issue is not getting to sleep at all it is staying asleep.

I am beyond desperate. I can feel this lack of sleep (for more than 3 years) really damage my health not to mention my mood and life. Do you have ANY ideas or advice? Thanks!

I see sleep interruptions in moms all the time, often they begin when moms are up at night with little ones, but then the kids begin sleeping through and mom is still awake.  I test adrenal function with most patients, particularly those who have sleep interruption or have trouble falling asleep or waking earlier than needed.  Cortisol, a hormone that is produced in the adrenal glands, is supposed to be high in the morning and low at night.  This cycle gives you energy in the morning and allows you to sleep at night.  Often, in our modern society and especially in moms, this cycle is switched so it is low in the morning and high at night, causing low energy during the day and interrupted/shallow sleep at night.  Not good!  The cortisol testing that I prefer is a saliva test called The Adrenal Stress Index, and you need to test through a licensed naturopathic physician, holistic MD or holistic nurse practitioner.  To find a naturopathic physician near you, visit:

Best to get this issue resolved - you deserve good sleep!  Of course, there are other issues that can cause sleep problems as well, so working with a licensed healthcare practitioner will insure that you get proper diagnosis and treatment.
