My nearly 4 yo son Aiden began SCREAMING yesterday when he urinates.  He has had balooning the past few months from what I've glimpsed here and there.  I went right to the walk-in-clinic and the doctor said his urine text came back fine, not a UTI or bladder infection. Upon inspection, pulled back a little bit of the meatus skin not retracted, the doctor said the foreskin looks tight, go to a urologist, looks like he'll need to be circumcised anyway.  I'm terrified the urologist will retract and push for circumcision and would rather avoid waling into a trap.  He prescribed a numbing ointment.

How can I help my son feel better?

This is normal. When the child urinates, the pressure of the urine inside the foreskin causes it to balloon. The ballooning tugs the foreskin away from the the underlying glans penis and causes the separating fusion to tear apart. This causes some pain. The pain is transient will end when the separation is complete. Do not worry.

Chances are that your doctor is totally ignorant of this phenomenon that affects intact boys.

Your child does NOT need a circumcision. He is undergoing a normal developmental process.
