Hello Dr. Sears,

Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions here.  My 2 year old son has had a cough for over a week.  It is a wet, slightly productive cough.  He has no other cold symptoms.  It is worse at night and nap time when he is lying down, though it doesn't seem to be disturbing his sleep too much.  We have been giving him Boiron Chestal, not sure if it is helping or not.

He has a history of ear infections.  He had tubes put in both ears right before his 1st birthday.  He was infection free until they fell out this past spring.  His last ear infection was in May and he was at the ENT just a couple weeks ago for a check up and he said his right ear still has some fluid, but it is clearing up.  I have been doing much reading about treating ear infections without surgery and plan to do that if he does start getting them again.

I am thinking that this cough may be related to teething as he has no other symptoms.  I have read that teething can cause post nasal drip and that could cause him to cough.  He was particulary irritable today and has a slight diaper rash.

I am not too sure about taking him to the doctors office for what could be teething, seeing as he has no other cold symptoms.  It seems that he sometimes picks up something else while he is there!

Thanks again for answering our questions here.  I really appreciate the thoughtful answers you give!

-Dawn

This is hard to say, but teething CAN cause a cough like this
