Hi Dr. Sears,
My son's poo habits changed the same week he hit 3 months, he went from pooing about 10 times a day to between 0-3 times. He is exclusively breastfed and his poo continues to be yellow/brown, occasionally green, but basically what it's looked like since he was a newborn. Around the time that he stopped pooing after every feed he also began to strain quite a bit during his bowel movements. He's obviously not constipated, and there's never been any blood in his stool or anything else that might mean an intestinal blockage, no fevers or anything. The most frustrating part of this is his 4 am poo...or rather, his 4 am attempt at poo. He wakes up wanting to be held, nursed, bounced, it takes us an hour to help him get back to sleep and we are, well, POOPED!
He is definately a high needs baby (meets each of the 12 signs) and nurses every 1 1/2 - 2 hours around the clock. I also think he might be teething (lots of drool, gnawing on things, pulling on ears, etc), so I know there is a lot going on in his little body. Part of me thinks it's probably developmental, and he's just becoming aware of his bodily functions and how everything is supposed to feel, but I can't figure out why he should be working soo hard!! Obviously, I'm a first time mom :)
Any ideas or advice you might have on why this is happening and what I might be able to do to help him feel better?
Thanks so much,
I see this somewhat often in breastfed 3 to 4 month olds. My first kids was like this too. We gave him diluted prune juice - a couple ounces - every day. It really did the trick and kept him regular and pain-free. As for reasons or causes of this, one thing could be dairy products in your diet? Even if she seemed ok before. Around 6 months when you start foods, you can use foods to keep her regular.
