Hi Dr. Sears, Thank you in advance for help with my question. I'm a little confused about immunity and doses with the polio vaccine. My daughter just turned four and has not had any vaccines since 12 months. At that appointment, she finished her fourth dose of Pentacel. I was reading through your book again last night and am concerned that she may need another polio dose to be immune. I originally thought that she only needed four doses of polio, which she received with the Pentacel shot. However, then I read that one does must be at age 4 or 5. Is that correct? Even though she received four doses of Pentacel does she still have to have another polio shot to have full immunity, or would the four she has already received be enough, even though the last so was at 12 months?

Thanks so much, Ashley

Just wanted to let you know Dr. Sears should respond soon. He's been a bit busy lately but I'll give him a heads up to let you know your post is awaiting a reply. :)

Yes, you would need 1 more dose after age 4 to be considered immune. But since polio doesn't exist in our country, you could defer this dose until any risky type of travel was to occur.
