Hi everyone!  I thought it might be nice to have a little space to talk amongst ourselves about being pregnant for the first time.  Even though I'm a midwifery student and I know what is normal and what's not, every little symptom is new to me, and I want to talk about it!  So I thought this could be a safe space to talk about all these "little pregnancy things" that we might be a little embarrassed to talk about in other spaces.

So, hi! joy.gif I am wombjuice and this is my first pregnancy--I am 6 weeks and 1 day today!  It was a surprise and though my fiance' and I were absolutely shocked at first, we are both happy now.  He seems much more excited than me...it's been taking a little while for the shock to blow over for me.  But I'm getting more and more excited as the days go on.

I was about 4 weeks and 5 days when I got that positive pregnancy test, and the only symptoms I had were exhaustion and peeing a lot.  I thought I was home free!  But two days ago, I started getting nauseous.  At first, I thought it was from the antibiotics I'm taking for a hurt wisdom tooth, but now I realize it's the pregnancy.  I get nauseous mostly in the evening!!  It's way worse when I don't eat, but the thought of most foods is making me sick!  Very confusing, lol.

Anyway, please introduce yourselves and let's chat about this first-time mama business!! love.gif

I'm a first time pregnancy as well. I'm a medical student so I know all these little weird things that are happening to me are normal but I still freak out over every one.

I am so excited! I am about five weeks today but not entirely sure because I had just gotten off the pill and period was irregular. I can't wait to see a heartbeat.

Are you going to find out if it is a boy or a girl? Part of me wants to, and my husband sure wants to know, but the other part of me thinks it's better as surprise. Luckily I have several months to decide :)

I'm a first timer! I'm cautiously joining the DDC threads, as I'm only 3w5d. I'm wondering what books people recommend. I've heard to stay away from What to Expect When You Are Expecting, but that is all I know. I suppose I should ask that question of more seasoned folks. :)

I'm really excited, but am trying to keep calm. There is so much that can happen in the first trimester. I'm also nervous about work and wondering how in the world I am going to be able to juggle everything. Next week I have two straight days of meetings and dinners with colleagues. I'll probably pass out by the end of the days. Yikes.

Nice to meet you all.

Hi writinglove!  The very first book I recommend you read is "Birth and Breastfeeding" by Michel Odent.  If there was only one book I could read throughout pregnancy, that would be the one.

After that one, I recommend:

"The Complete Book of Pregnancy and Childbirth" by Sheila Kitzinger

"The Natural Pregnancy Book" by Aviva Jill Romm

"Birthing From Within" by Pam England

Happy reading!  And congratulations to you and Harleth, too!! love.gif

Thank goodness for this thread! I'm around 4 to 6 weeks..and morning sickness hit me like a brick wall just a couple days ago, I had to take off work today because the vomiting just..ugh! I'm hoping to force myself to eat some crackers before getting out of bed tomorrow morning so I feel better. I'm nervous because I've had a couple miscarriages before and have been keeping quiet until the 3 month mark. SO has been blabbing though because he's so overly excited. I'm nervous..but getting more excited as time goes on. Just not right now as the little one is making me sick as a dog! lol

Hey ladies!!  So happy to find some other first -timers on here!!  I am 4w 5d and super excited to be pregnant!  I have been lucky so far with the symptoms and am carefully approaching every morning I wake up feeling good!  I am a Early Childhood educator and I teach Kindergarten with the new all day kindergarten in Ontario.  I love my job but feel like I am going crazy worrying about all the germs floating around me all the time!  I have always been an advid hand-washer but sometimes it feels like its not enough. I am a worrier and hope to learn as much as I can to keep myself from going crazy thinking about everything that"could" happen.  I just keep thinking - our Moms did this without half the info we have now and we all survived!

We can get through this!

Good luck to everyone!!

Thanks for posting this thread. It's so nice to have a base of first-timers who are at the same stage of the game. So happy to meet you all!

I'm 5w3d today and I have my first prenatal appointment in a couple of hours! Wish me luck! I was pretty nervous for quite a while because I was cramping quite a bit for 3-4 weeks (it started about 2 hours after we conceived...weird!). But the cramping seems to have subsided now, which I think is a good sign. I will just be so happy to get through this appt. today and find that everything's moving along swimmingly. :)

Since forever I've always said that I don't want to find out the gender of the baby while I'm pregnant. However, a few days after I found out I was pregnant I had these intense urges to find out what it is. I guess I'm already feeling nesting or something; all I want to do is find out so I can prepare everything for the little one! So yes, I'm so anxious to find out that I don't think I'll be able to wait. I'm in grad school and I tutor at a different university, so I come across a lot of different people in my travels...sooooo, when it gets to the point when I'm showing and random people ask me if I found out, I'm going to tell them "no" and see how many people's predictions are right. That way I can still have the exciting surprise element to some extent, but still be able to prepare. :)

Hello all,

One of the true challenges I am facing is how to integrate this pregnancy and then a baby into my work life. Next week I have two 12 hour days, plus commuting time, and I'm finding myself very freaked out. So far my only major symptom has been fatigue (and sore bbs), and if I am not in bed by 9:45 p.m., I find myself really stressed out and tired the next day.

How are the rest of you dealing with work-related challenges.

Oh, and for the meeting lunches we will likely go for sushi. Ugh, I guess I stick to udon soup.

writinglove, get the vegetarian sushi! Avocado is supposed to be a good source of folic acid, so you can get the sushi with the most avocado in it.

So I'm really bummed because my mom told me she never got nauseous when she was pregnant with me...because of this, I thought when I got pregnant, I'd be nausea-free!  Then BAM, a day before 6 weeks I started getting nausea.  I haven't thrown up, so I realize that I'm incredibly lucky.  But, I feel like I've been drinking too much, rode a roller coaster, and just can't puke.  It's a horrible feeling!

So today, I went to Walgreens and bought some Sea-Bands and haven't taken them off since.  I do feel less nauseous, but I also took a nap, so I'm not sure if it's the seabands or the nap.  I'm sure as heck not gonna take them off to find out, though! lol.gif

Anyone else experiencing forgetfulness these days? Maybe it is just that my resources are being directed elsewhere, but I have forgotten my wallet, my vocabulary, etc. more times than I would like to admit. eyesroll.gif

Is pregnancy an excuse to be forgetful? That would be great because I do feel like recently I've been forgetting A LOT!

I am also a first-timer :)

I just had a bfp this morning at 10dpo - I honestly expected the test to be negative because I thought it was too early to test, and couldn't believe it when a second pink line showed up!

I am traveling overseas in a week and am feeling really nervous about it.  The chances of miscarriage are still high, I may start experiencing morning sickness, and I will also have to come up with creative excuses as to why I am not drinking, haha.

My mom told me the same thing, and about a week ago I started getting nauseous in the mornings and after every meal!  I guess it's true that every pregnancy and every body is different... *sigh

Anyone experience cramping early on?  I have been having some mild cramping on and off over the last few days and even though I keep reading that this is normal, it worries me.

Kelsey -

BFP means "big fat positive".
bb's mean "boobs"
DH is "dear husband"

uhhh... can't think of any others at this moment.

So I realized I didn't introduce myself to this thread. I'm also a first-timer and over-the-moon with happiness! I'm living in Italy for seven more weeks while I finish grad school, and then I move back to San Diego, CA to be with DH. Can't wait! I'm 6w4d and loving it.

Nausea comes and goes, on days I don't get much sleep it's worse (like yesterday, yuck). I've got the sore bb's, bloating, nausea, and omg the hunger! eat.gif Last week my mood swings were epic, but this week they seem to have come under control.

I'm so excited to hang out with you guys because none of my friends in Italy is pregnant, so I need to vent once in a while!

I am very grateful t still not have nausea - only some right after I take my vitamin. However I keep waking up at night with cramping/gas pains.

My husband and I are both getting really forgetful. I think we are so busy trying to remember not to tell anyone even though we are excited we are forgetting other things.

I am excited for my vcation that start this Thursday. Will have first dr. appointment when we get back and hopefully we will see a nice growing baby then!

Hi there.  I seem to be a cramper, too.  I've had them on and off since a few days before I was supposed to get my period.  They are especially strong during and after orgasm.  Never really painful, though, and they always go away.  Make sure you are staying very well hydrated.

I've been crampy/achey/just AWARE of those muscles in a new way since my BFP. I'm 9 weeks now (straddling the line between Dec 11 and Jan 12 DDCs) and I still have those sensations most days, though every couple of days lately I don't notice it as much. When I was worried about it earlier, the reassurance was always that as long as it's mild and not sharp pain, and as long as there's no blood along with it, it's probably the uterus and surrounding structure stretching and starting to increase in size - that it's normal and nothing to worry about :-)

Ooohhh, major nasty nausea ALL. DAY. LONG. today.  *sigh*  If I don't eat, I'm nauseous.  If I eat, I'm nauseous.  Even thinking of food makes me nauseous.  Stuff I would normally love makes me want to gag just thinking about it...

The only thing I want to eat in this whole wide world is a chicken burrito from Chipotle Grill with extra guacamole, which is absolutely out of the question in Italy (I can't even find guacamole...).  Can someone FedEx me a burrito???  winky.gif

Hello First Time Mama's, great thread, learned a lot from your replies. Thank you!

Anyway, I am almost 8w (tomorrow) and still trying to get passed the initial shock (I found out two days ago when I visited my DR) of the news. I believe my boyfriend is a little more excited than I am (I feel a little guilty to admit this). All I think about is all the things that can go wrong, but as days go by I feel better and a bit more excited.

As of now I haven't had many symptoms, at first my bbs were very sore/tender but now they feel better. Also, thank goodness I have not had morning sickness just a bit nauseaous, especially when I am a bit hungry. Oh yeah, I am constantly hungry! Today I woke up feeling so thirsty! I've had minor cramping on and off.

Overall, I am feeling well. Congrats to the rest of you gals.

I think I read somewhere that it's a low blood sugar thing, but I'm not sure.

montessorimama, I am nauseous all day long, too!  And the one specific food that makes the nausea worse is AVOCADO.  Formerly my favorite food in the world...now I can't even read about it or smell it or look at it without wanting to run to the bathroom, lol.  And I used to put guacamole on everything.  So weird!! lol.gif

montessorimama, I am nauseous all day long, too!  And the one specific food that makes the nausea worse is AVOCADO.  Formerly my favorite food in the world...now I can't even read about it or smell it or look at it without wanting to run to the bathroom, lol.  And I used to put guacamole on everything.  So weird!! lol.gif

Oh no!  I would be distraught if I couldn't eat guacamole!  You poor thing...

And actually, I think you're right about nausea and low blood sugar.  A few days after I found out I was pregnant, I woke up from a long nap and went straight to take a shower.  I got a HUGE wave of nausea (my first) followed by a huge drop in blood pressure, caused by low blood sugar.  Now I make sure to eat some fruit as soon as I wake up from naps and about 2 hours between meals.  I'm still nauseous but at least that horrible "omg, I'm going to hurl" feeling hasn't come back.

Today I was nauseous again, after a whooole day of feeling awful yesterday, so I drank some unfiltered apple cider vinegar (1 tbsp) in a glass of water.  It helped SO MUCH!  I totally recommend it to anyone feeling queezy.  It was delicious, tart, and refreshing, and settled my stomach for a while.  :)
