I was hoping that some of the mamas here would interested in doing something that might be an interesting experiment. I'm especially hoping some of the first time mamas would interested.

What I'd like is for you to make a post with all your "due dates" and see which ends up being the closest. The 3 main ones I was thinking of are: Naegle's method - this is the standard method (but seriously out of date and wrong, esp for first timers) of dating used by doctors and a lot of midwives. It's the one that the little wheels are based on

Ultrasound date - assuming you have an early ultrasound and are given a date based on it

Mittendorf-Williams - this is newer method based on current research, the studies showed it was a lot more accurate than Naegle's

Additional possibilities if you know ovulation date could be calculating Naegle & Mittendorf-Williams from ovulation instead of from LMP.

To calculate using Naegle's method for yourself (or you could use just about any online calculator) it is LMP + 9 months + 7 days.

To calculate using the Mittendorf-Williams method take the first day of your last period and subtract three months. Then you add fifteen days if this is your first baby and you are Caucasian. If you are not Caucasian or this is not your first baby, you will want to add on ten days.

The easiest way to calculate using ovulation is to just add or subtract the number of days your ovulation differed from the "standard" 14 days.

My due dates (based on LMP):

Naegle's method (from http://www.josephsunny.com/medsoft/nagel.html) : Jan 14, 2012

Today's Parent & BabyCentre due date calculator Jan 12, 2012

Mittendorf-Williams:  Jan 17, 2012

Based on ovulation:

Naegle: Jan 16, 2012

Common due date calculators: Jan 14, 2012

Mittendorf-Williams: Jan 19, 2012

Hope some other people want to play along! :)

When I initially calculated my due date, I used the Baby Center calculator, and counted back 14 days from ovulation and used that date in the LMP spot. That calculation brought me to a Dec. 27th due date. This is the date I have been going by, except that my midwife encouraged me to add 10-12 days to that in my mind because of being a first time mom and having longer cycles than the "average" 28 days. So that brings us to Jan. 6-8. I figure, this baby's going to pop out sometime between Christmas and Epiphany. Ish.  lol.gif

My due dates (based on LMP): March 15, 2011

Naegle's method (from http://www.josephsunny.com/medsoft/nagel.html) : Dec. 22, 2011

BabyCenter due date calculator: Dec. 20, 2011

Mittendorf-Williams: Dec. 30, 2011

Based on ovulation: April 5, 2011

Naegle: Jan 12, 2012

BabyCenter calculator, "date of conception" option: Jan 6, 2012

Mittendorf-Williams: Jan 20, 2012

Conchobhar 06-30-2011 09:59 AM

My due dates (based on LMP): 15 Apr. 2011

Naegle's method (from http://www.josephsunny.com/medsoft/nagel.html) : Jan. 22, 2012

BabyCenter due date calculator:  Jan. 20, 2012

Mittendorf-Williams: Jan. 25, 2012

I'll guess on ovulation dates...  I get mittelschmertz, but since I was on Implanon for 18 months, things got screwed up and now I don't know if the pain signifies actual release or a couple days after.  With my first kid, we DTD 8 hours before I felt pain and got preggo. We tried that this time around and nothing happened.  DTD a couple days before and after and success.  So I really don't know when it actually happened.  But if anything, it's within days, so it shouldn't matter all too much.

My due dates (based on Ovulation):  30 Apr. 2011

Naegle's method (from http://www.josephsunny.com/medsoft/nagel.html) : Feb. 6, 2012

BabyCenter due date calculator:  Jan. 21, 2012

Mittendorf-Williams: Jan. 26, 2012

BTW, if I did Mittendorf-Williams for my last kid's EDD, she would have been due March 15th.  She was born on the 13th, but I was given cervidil, so... Still much closer than the MW's date of March 9th.

bentlaj11 06-30-2011 12:32 PM

My due dates (based on LMP): 4/3/11

Naegle's method (from http://www.josephsunny.com/medsoft/nagel.html) : Jan.10, 2012

BabyCenter due date calculator: Jan. 8, 2012 (also the date my midwife gave me)

Mittendorf-Williams: Jan. 13, 2012

I can't remeber my LMP for DS, but I'm guessing that the M-W rule would have put me at a closer date than the date given to me by my provider.

milomama 06-30-2011 12:49 PM

Based on LMP (Apr 4)

Naegle: Jan 11, 2012

Baby Center: Jan 9

Mittendorf: Jan 14

Based on Ovulation (Apr 28)

Naegle: Jan 21

Baby Center (date I conceived): Jan 19

Mittendorf: Jan 24

That's crazy!  What a range!  I guess it comes down to this baby coming when it's good and ready to pop out!  I've been telling myself "mid-January" instead of a date, so I don't get a date too stuck in my head!

ameliaanne 06-30-2011 01:46 PM

jessica_lizette 06-30-2011 04:13 PM

Based on LMP (April 1st, 2011):

Naegle's method (from http://www.josephsunny.com/medsoft/nagel.html) : Jan 8th, 2012

So anywhere from the 6th til the 15th!

Devaskyla 06-30-2011 11:55 PM

I'm so happy about how many people decided to play along! I really wasn't sure anyone would

Ameliaanne If you're not sure about the M-W date, you can give me your LMP date and I'll double check it for you.

milomama I know, the range is amazing. And it really affects the pressure you get at the end, especially if you're seeing an OB, so I really wish they'd use a more accurate dating method. No wonder there's so much iatrogenic prematurity these days!

I figured out both dates with d3 and he came 2 days after my M-W date & a week or so after my Naegle's date (I can't remember exactly what it was now. )

ameliaanne 07-01-2011 08:31 AM

Thank you! LMP was 4/14/11 (caucasian, 1st child)...

Devaskyla 07-01-2011 03:46 PM

I get Jan 29 too, so yep, you must've done it right. :)

ameliaanne 07-02-2011 02:09 PM

amazing. thank you!

My due dates (based on LMP):

Naegle's method (from http://www.josephsunny.com/medsoft/nagel.html) : Feb 2, 2012

Today's Parent & BabyCentre January 31, 2012

Mittendorf-Williams:  Feb 5, 2012

Ultrasound Feb 6, 2012

I am sticking with the last week of January because I will need to be induced because of diabetes, Addisons, ad high blood pressure/.

cwill 07-06-2011 12:42 PM

Well, Mittendorf-Williams puts me in January, so hello everyone!

I cheated and based my LMP off of date of conception (which I know within 2 days).  Anyway, I've got

Naegle: December 27th

M-W: Januaray 4th

BabyCenter: December 25th

rtjunker 07-07-2011 03:46 PM

This is my first pregnancy, I had an early ultrasound because my cycle tends to be longer than the average 28 days, and I wasn't tracking ovulation.

My due dates (based on LMP): March 27, 2011

Naegle's method : Jan 03, 2012

Mittendorf-Williams:  Jan 11, 2012

Ultrasound: Jan 10, 2012

Baby arrived: Dec 30, 2011

danamichele 07-08-2011 12:48 PM

I'll do this for this pregnancy and for my previous one.  My family has a very strong history of late births, though.  (My aunt even had twins a week late, with her second pregnancy!)  So obviously the later date was more accurate for me with my daughter, and I'd be surprised if this little one proves otherwise!

First Pregnancy:

LMP: 12/10/07

Naegle's Method: 9/17/08

Mittendorf-Williams Method: 9/25/08

Actual birth date: 10/3/08

This Pregnancy:

LMP: 3/27/11

Naegle's Method: 1/3/12

Mittendorf-Williams Method: 1/6/12

All of these dates are different from the standard 40 weeks or 280 days, however.  My first due date calculated by adding 280 days was 9/15/08 and this one is 1/1/12.  I don't know my ovulation dates, but ultrasounds during both pregnancies have confirmed LMP dates.

cedarwoman 07-08-2011 09:23 PM

Neat!

My due dates (based on LMP): March 30, 2011

Naegle's method : Jan 04, 2012

Mittendorf-Williams:  Jan 14, 2012

Ultrasound: Jan 10, 2012

First baby :)

chilichiki 07-09-2011 07:44 PM

Naegle's method (from http://www.josephsunny.com/medsoft/nagel.html) : 2/2/2012

Today's Parent & BabyCentre due date calculator January 31, 2012

Mittendorf-Williams:  Febrary 10, 2012??? Not quite sure I calculated that one right...that seems a little far!

Based on ovulation: Feb. 1, 2012

chilichiki 07-09-2011 07:47 PM

Mittendorf-Williams:  should be Jan 31 2012 since its my second child.

On a side note-  my son came EXACTLY on his due date :o)

I went into labor with my daughter on my EDD (she was born a few hours later into day 40w1d)...that didn't stop my son from being eight long days post EDD!  Man alive, it was a loooong week as I stupidly assumed that my second kid would follow in the footsteps of the first.

chilichiki 07-10-2011 10:19 AM

AfricanQueen- how was the second labor compared to the first??

I hate to say it, but my labor with my son was pretty quick (after a really awful pregnancy) so I can't help but hope that this one will be just as quick!

AfricanQueen99 07-10-2011 05:43 PM

Daughter was born 12 hours after the first contraction. Born in four pushes.

Son was born 3 hours after the first contraction. Also in four pushes.

Both were super simple after easy pregnancies.

chilichiki 07-10-2011 06:46 PM

This pregnancy is soooo drastically different than my first, so i am wondering how different this labor will be.  With my son, I went in the hospital and had him about eight hours later....I think I might have got it too easy and this one is going to be one of those 24 hour labors.

My god I hope not :o)

rtjunker 07-11-2011 10:16 AM

I just wanted to say this informal due date study sets my mind at ease a little, just realizing the vast differences in EDD depending on what method one uses, makes me realize that if my pregnancy does go past my due date, there's no need to worry.

L'lee 07-11-2011 10:25 AM

Fun!

Based on LMP (Mar 29)

standard dating: Jan 3

Naegle: Jan 5

Mittendorf-Williams: Jan 8

Based on Ovulation/Mittelschmertz (Apr 17)

* standard dating: Jan 8 (the "date" I've been using)

Naegle: Jan 10

Mittendorf-Williams: Jan 13

* If this baby is born on the same date of the process as DS (37w/2d), he/she would be born on Dec 21.

He was born 3 days before the full moon. I just looked it up and I ovulated at the new moon that time and the full moon this time - interesting. I'm curious if that will have anything to do with it all.

Full moons are 12/10-11 and 1/8-9, so maybe I'll be on time this time. Who knows!

I've been telling people the baby is due late Dec or early Jan, based on the *s. My feeling is it will be Dec, but I want to be mentally ready if I go later than last time!

That's one reason I decided to do this, actually. If people know their "due date" isn't as exact as they've been led to believe, it might help them resist an unnecessary induction on or near an arbitrary date.

The main thing that led me in this direction is the doctor trying to get me to come in for an induction, on my due date, with ds1, because he couldn't bother even putting the wheel in the right spot, much less calculating the date properly. He tried to terrorize me into an induction because ds1 was just "so overdue". I finally had to agree that I wouldn't hold him responsible if something happened to ds because I refused to be induced.

It was just so silly. It made me really realize how ridiculous this whole due date farce is. It's just a guess, no matter how you figure it out and shouldn't be used to harass and terrify pregnant women into unnecessary medical procedures.

This sounds like fun!

My due dates (based on LMP): Jan 9, 2012 (from midwife's wheel)

Naegle's method (from http://www.josephsunny.com/medsoft/nagel.html) : Sept 19, 1993

Early ultrasound EDD: Oct 5, 1993

Mittendorf-Williams: Sept 27, 1993

He was born Oct 2.  :)

(I have dates from my 2nd but he ended up coming at 29 weeks, and with my 3rd, I can't seem remember any dates! Lol! ETA:  I think my due date was oct 20/21 and she was born on oct 16.  But thats all I got!)

writinglove 07-15-2011 11:34 AM

Naegle: Jan 28

Midwife: Jan 26

MW: Feb 6

I have a sense that the bean is going to be born sometime in the first week of February.
