So now he has MRSA and is recovering from a collapsed lung.  I'm finding it harder to be peaceful about this current situation, where he's so sick, and only improving a tiny bit each day. I don't know when his infection will be gone, but I'm sure he'll have to be well again before they can try tube feeds, and then they'd probably have to just start with the teeny amounts that they did in the beginning. I'm extra sad because the VERY DAY that he got sick was the day that they planned to start weaning him off of his TPN (his IV fluids/nutrition) by taking away the vitamins and lipid bags and just keeping him on a clear fluids bag. This sickness has set him back at least a week or two. I am in tears.

This makes me so sad. ): MRSA is so common in hospitals (actually my last paper has a significant portion of it dedicated to diseases contracted in hospitals)  and it's really scary. I'm so sorry he's going through this..I hope he gets out of there soon! Hang in there mama!

Sending you peace tonight mama. You have been so strong throughout all of this...I can't imagine how overwhelming this latest news has been. Continuing to think of you stillheart.gif

Jonathan is so lucky to have such a wonderful mama in his life to see him through these ups and downs! I hope that this is a shorter setback than expected and that he can get back on track soon.

So his infection is MRSA, and they have him on "contact precautions," which means that everyone who comes into contact with him, even me and Tim, has to wear a gown and gloves.  My latest "worry" now is that this will be a permanent thing. A friend sent me a link to her journal from when one of her babies was in the NICU, and when they started having to gown/glove with MRSA, they told her that it would be that way "until discharge." I didn't ask for the timeframe yesterday and the nurse didn't volunteer, but I am sure praying and hoping that this is not a permanent thing. How am I supposed to do kangaroo care, or nurse, with a huge barrier between us? :(

Oh, Andrea, I'm so saddened to hear this.  I hope he improves quickly and you can go back to kangaroo care and nursing.

Dh had VRE in hospital, which we had to gown & glove for, and it was for the entire rest of his stay (& a lot of medpros do precautions even now since he's never gotten around to checking if it's gone) BUT VRE doesn't really have a treatment (unless it gets inside your body). It doesn't cause problems unless you're really ill, it's just really contagious. I know they treat MRSA, so they'll probably drop the precautions once it's dealt with.  It's not like you can breastfeed with the stupid precautions

Had a good visit yesterday and found out that the precautions are just for staff and visitors, not for mom and dad.

I just wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you.  The roller coaster part of his Nicu stay could last a while.. but eventually things do even out.  My 27 weeker is 8 weeks old today and things have just started to calm down in the last 2 weeks.  We are finally to the point where I no longer have to worry about whether or not he will be coming home with us.  I'm hoping for a very uneventful Nicu stay for your little guy.  Hang in there.

One of the NICU doctors just called to give me an update. They did take out the chest tube from Jonathan's left side, but now he has some pneumothorax (air between the lungs and the chest wall) on his right side, so he has a chest tube there now. The doctor said that these lung issues are a complication from the infection. His blood pressure is also down a little bit so he's going back on the dopamine, and the doctor hopes he won't have to be on it for too long.

His first 10 days were SO SO SO good, better than I could have hoped for or dreamed about. I was hopeful that I might be able to hold him by Christmas. Now, it will be a huge surprise if I even get to hold him this year.  :(

NICU just called again. They never seem to call with good news. Jonathan has some pneumothorax on his left side, too, so they had to put that chest tube back in as well. Now he has two chest tubes, one on each side. His feeds had been increased to 1 CC every three hours, but those are being discontinued (again) so as not to stress his tiny body further.

I got my first call yesterday from the Nicu with good news.. after 2 months of crappy news calls.  I hope you get a good news call soon!  I was able to hold Finley when they changed his bed and cleaned it.  I did have to go at 2:30 in the morning to be able to do that, but can you ask when they change sheets and if you can be there to hold him for it?
