This excellent essay has been circulating around lately and I am reposting it here because....well, because I think it should be required reading for anyone involved in maternity care.

http://www.smar.info/article-30653416.html

I am copying 250 words from the essay here, as that is all copyright allows:
Quote:
"I have seen, over years of practice in maternal-fetal medicine, an odd and somewhat unsettling pride among women who announce that they have a “high-risk pregnancy.” Although the inherent literal meaning of the term high-risk pregnancy is one that entails a greater risk of a poor outcome (for mother or baby,) the subtext seems to be that high risk equals high value. In some cases it is difficult to persuade a low-risk woman to continue her care with a general OBGYN practice instead. “But I’m high-risk,” she says. Does she really mean, “I’m high-status,” or “My baby is high-value,”

Oh Dang! It looks like they've taken it off or moved it. You can read a PDF in the original journal publication (which I think requires a fee), but let me see if I can find it elsewhere.
