So i finally sucked it up and enrolled in a midwife asst course and a breastfeeding educator course, which i am SO excited about. It costs a lot of money but this is what i want to do. I am also pretty excited to take a doula workshop in April. Again, $$$.
I decided to this all for my own learning and knowledge, as we live in a tiny town and i probably would be lucky to see one labor a YEAR. And i know this, i still want to learn.
Then i finish the first few lessons and realize, in order to go to the next chapter i will need 4 books, which total almost $400. Wow.
Just makes me sad.... There is always something holding me back...

Its tough to think that i am spending so much money on something i will likely never be paid to do.

Have you looked at half.com for affordable books? They don't have everything, but they have lots!

I'd love to know more about what and where you are doing all of this. I'm in NM, too, and while I know you said you're in a small town, it can't be further than Denver, which is where I was planning to attend a doula workshop.

Books are expensive, for sure. I know my library only has a limited amount of midwifery, doula, and breastfeeding books, and even Amazon's prices are high. I just placed an order earlier from Midwifery Today and spent more than I should have... *sigh*

Maybe there's a way to share texts with others, or a lending library of sorts.

Also, you never know what life will give you, so, you may end up elsewhere in the future where your passion will pay off. If this is what feeds your soul, it's likely worth the investment.

I'm cleaning out my bookshelf, if you want to pm me a list of the books you need, I'll see if I have any of them.

But I'll also say that while many of your textbooks you may not find locally, check out the used book stores in every biggish town you can hit.  I found a lot of great books for really cheap doing that.  Not necessarily your main books, but great supplemental reading.
