The OB did a cervix check and said that I was not even one cm dialated and I am 39 weeks today.
It is my first baby. Is this normal? It seems like everyone I talk to is at least 3 cm by this point. Does this mean labor is probably still a long ways off for me?
Honestly? It means absolUTEly NOTHING. I know a woman who walked around dilated to a six for six weeks. A sisterfriend of mine had the absolute WORST "bishop's score" (or the "score" they give your cervix to tell whether they think an induction will take or not) that it is possible to have...and 14 hours later had a baby in her arms via a non-induced vaginal birth.
The ONLY information gleaned by doing a vaginal exam, even DURING labor, is where your cervix is at EXACTLY that moment!!
I would strongly suggest that you keep your pants on at the next prenatal visit. I would read about how a woman's body works when it is preparing for labor and laboring to give birth, so that you understand the mechanisms involved. It will give you a greater ability to trust your body, to trust your body's ability to give birth! You CAN do it.
I didn't dilate or efface at all until I went into actual labor. I know at 39 weeks your feeling very ready, but there is still time, but it could also be tomorrow! The body is an amazing thing! As these ladies will tell you, some of the worst ways to measure progress with with dilation then when your in labor, the Clock!
Totally normal. I went to a prenatal appointment and wanted to be checked while my midwife did the GB swab. I was 2cm and did not feel anywhere close to labor at all. This was at 5pm. My son was born at 11:50pm the same day.
I was less than 1 cm at 39, and I was less than 1 cm after 15 hours of light labor after PROM. 24 hours after PROM I was 4. A couple of hours later I was holding my baby. It means absolutely nothing. FWIW, 41+1 is average for a first timer (mine was 41+4).
38 weeks: 1 cm, no ctx
39 weeks: no check, no ctx
40+0, 9 am: no check, light, consistent ctx
40+0, 4 pm: 4 cm, light, inconsistent ctx
40+1, 6 am: 5 cm, moderate, inconsistent ctx
40+1, 5 pm: 5 cm, moderate, inconsistent ctx
40+1, 8 pm: 9 cm, hard ctx, pushing baby out
