Why does your friend think it's a better idea than castor oil?

I've never heard of any midwives using goldenseal to start labor. I know it can cause contractions, but I don't really think the action would be strong enough to start labor.

She's not liking the idea of having to poop so much! I'm under the thought that if your willing to poop then your willing to induce if not then maybe your not really ready yet! I did find an old thread on it and directed her to that so she could work out what she wants to do!

Not willing to poop? HA. The last 3 of my labors have been nothing but poop fests. Maybe it's a precip. birth thing....

On a side note, has anyone tried the cold water induction mentioned in HM2?

If she is not up for the poop, she could also try homeopathic induction.

Goldenseal is not used for induction. Where did she hear of doing this? I don't think I would trust that source of information!

I used cumin tea (1tbsp cumin powder to a mug of hot water with a square of raw potato, nasty btw) to get my labor going with PROM. It worked for me.

Never heard of goldenseal. If she does do castor oil, make sure she knows to take a full 4 oz. in 2 doses a few hours apart. If she doesn't take enough, she'll just get poopy...

hi sara!

i have seen goldendeal contraindicated for pg, because of it's immediate action on the uterus. i.e., premature labor. i have also found many stories of goldenseal starting a good strong labor pattern within an hour. so i tried it. i took a lot. maybe 15 grams. i even used it internally on my cervix. and it didn't do a thing. so now i don't know what to think. that probably doesn't help you, but i thoughti should share! congratulations on your pg!

there was a similar question a while back-- goldenseal is a mucous membrane astringent and it does have some uterine activity-- I know atleast 1 midwife who did goldenseal inductions-- but goldenseal at the levels for induction may net the same result as castor oil--
Castor oil has the advantage of having been used historically for a very long time and it has some recent studies that support it's efficacy--

Why not just go for a lovely acupuncture or reflexology session? Some great priming for labor practitioners out there. And it can help mom feel really relaxed: calm before the storm?
