Hey mamas, did you all hear about the online midwifery classes Gloria Lemay is holding? Looks like an awesome opportunity with classes every week for 5 months. Here's the link with the info:

Yes!  I love this (and Gloria!)  I hope more instructors follow suit.  I love the live format instead of pre-recorded, and hope for some video soon.

Also, the AAMI conference calls are great.  I'm listening to one on GBS now with a ton of info!

What is everyone up to these days?

I am plugging away at college. Just finishing up my apprenticeship (one birth to go), and working on my AAMI studies.

Sometimes it is also the way you are introduced. I've been "uninvited" to one birth - but it was VERY much not me and due to a very unique set of circumstances the couple wanted.

My Sr. Midwives have often mentioned me being at the birth because I'm very useful/necessary, trained in NRP/CPR/other skills, have 6 children of my own, and it's also like having a free doula. I've never been sold as someone who "just watches" - kwim?  During prenatals, I've almost always been hand on and would (early on) have them follow up what I did. I always try to be personable and I'm very open about my own experiences if moms are curious. I'm familiar with other things my Sr. mw's are not - babywearing & cloth diapering because my kiddoes are much younger. I'm plugged in to homeschool groups and such as well. So sometimes you need to know how you're being presented and how you present yourself. As someone who is taking NARM next month, I do feel qualified to be an independent midwife -- but do I think I'm above my Sr. MW's? No way. If someone is shopping on experience alone, they wouldn't choose me. If someone is looking for ____ then they might be likely to because while I'm similar to my Sr. MW's, I've also got lots of areas where I am not.

I think it'll make having an apprentice quite interesting when I'm licensed. I can't imagine choosing someone that different from me. I'm even picky about my backup doulas, making sure that they have a similar personality.

We need lots and lots of different midwives because there are lots and lots of different women. :)

Happy single mom of six amazing children ~ Charlotte 15, Bethany 13, James 11, Joseph 7, Noah 6, and Naomi 4.

Blessed to be a CPM/LM in Virginia and doing work that I love.. as well as blessed to have worked with talented midwives who shared their knowledge with me.

I hate it when good threads die. I thought about starting a new one for 2011 since this one is from 2010. Lol. Oh well.

So, where are you in va? I am in Richmond. And I love it here. I hope to one day open a birth center.
