My name is Kate, and my husband and I are getting ready to start our family. No due date yet -- but we figure we should start getting to know the midwives and doulas in the area before we're "on the clock." Any recommendations as to who I should check out?
I had both of my babies at the Birth and Women's Health Center, Tucson's only free standing birth center. I had as few interventions as a home birth, but it was a beautiful facility and was entirely covered by insurance. Since I was there, they have moved into a new building and they have waterbirth tubs in eaxh of their 4 birthing rooms. I'm still in love with the place. I will say a potential disadvantage though. The birth center is extremely strict in who they take as clients. You really need to have a textbook normal pregnancy to be eligible to birth there. Women have been known to "risk out" of the birth center over minor issues a homebirth midwife would be willing to handle.
Speaking of home births, I can pm the names of some of the home birth licensed midwives I know. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to "advertise" anyone online here.
I went through a DONA doula training course sponsered by Desert Doulas (I haven't yet finished my certification). They are the largest doula organization in Tucson, though many doulas work independently. Desert Doulas would be a good place to start searching though.
I'm a doula here in Tucson! Here's my website: www.swelldoula.com
