Hi everyone! I need some feedback please.
I have been hired by a couple expecting twins in early February to be their birth doula. I have a contract that I'm doing just as their birth doula as it might be that she has a c-section and then I'd be playing a different role.
They want me to be on-call starting now as she could deliver at any time. To give a little background, she has been in the hospital on bedrest for the last month and a half for a shortened cervix. There have been no other complications and she was released for home last night. They also want me to be on-call to ask questions and talk over any "issues" if they come up. They want me to charge a weekly fee for this service as no one knows how long it will last. What are your thoughts on what the fee should be?
I normally charge $1200 a birth which includes phone/email support once hired, pre-natal home visit to discuss birth wishes, on call 24 hours 2 weeks before due date, with couple once in active labor and until an hour or two after birth plus a post partum visit. I want to charge them a lower rate for birth as it will not cover the "on call 24 hours 2 weeks before due date" which will fall under the on call now contract.
I hope this makes sense and I look forward to hearing from you all.
So you're making two contracts?
Why not just simplify things and make one contract, specifically for their situation. I would have it include all of the on call time starting asap, then the prenatals, birth, and etc. like normal. I wouldn't charge less if it were me, since you're going to be doing a lot of work being on call for the next 6-8 weeks potentially.
If she does end up having a section, I'd still call myself her doula, even if you aren't going to be in the OR with her. You're still going to be helping her by being on call, helping her prepare for the operation, meeting at the hospital, helping her recover and breastfeed, etc.
I could be getting this all wrong, but that's what I would do based on what you've said so far. :)
