Register with www.doulamatch.net It's free and I've had people find me on there.

Join your local doula networking group, or start one if there isn't one in your area.

Keep business cards in your wallet (or pocket!). Hand them out when people tell you that someone they know is pregnant.

Ask to speak at local childbirth classes. Prepare a 2-3 minute presentation on what a doula does.

I'm already a member of doulamatch.net - and I'm a member of the Colorado Doula Association.

Thank you for the advice. I'll try handing my cards out more often. Maybe that'll help.

There's also a site called The Doula Exchange where you can post a listing. Make a Facebook page for your businesses. Drop off your business cards at the local child/maternity/health shops. I'm hoping word of mouth will be good enough after I've been at it a while!

Nearly all of my clients are word of mouth now. When you're good at what you do, you'll find yourself in demand.
Basically for now, you need to start talking to everyone who would be seeing, serving your target market: pregnant moms. Exchange brochures, cards, make coupons for your services, like $50 off if they've been referred by..._______.
That will encourage other practitioners to hand out your cards too.
