Music has been great for me in labor.  Anyone care to share their fave songs to labor to?  I am thinking upbeat for some and then really chill, too.  I like a mix of different styles of music so there is a wide range but here are some of my faves.

We're creating ours online and then will download it to the Ipod so it can be in two different rooms if I need to move around the house.  It's less than 3 hours long at this point though and I don't need such a short labor on tons of repeat, I don't think.winky.gif  So, please share some other songs with me!

Dixie Chicks: Lullaby

Coldplay: Yellow

Mason Jennings: Be Here Now

Ryan Adams: Hallelujah & Come Home

Otis Redding: That's How Strong My Love Is

Brian Johnson: Love Came Down

The Gayatri Mantra (We sing it to the babies in Bali as they are being born.)

The Avett Brothers: The Salvation Song

Everything by Third Day that is calming and not too intense.  I especially like God of Wonders.

The Four Tops: Reach Out and I'll Be There

One Republic: Good Life

Bethany Dillion: I'm Yours

Anything by The Innocence Mission (i doula'd for a musician friend who labored to them and it brings back the best memories.  the music is super soothing.)

Roman Candle: The Big Light (the musician friend I doula'd for)

Bob Marley: Is This Love?

Barry Loius Polisar: All I Want is You

I've basically split my Ipod into three sections based on how I'm feeling.

Group One these are my favorites that usually get me motivated and are good distraction music.

Mostly Gansta Rap =) Maybe I can help shake the baby down the birth canal!

Creedence Clearwater Revival

Blink 182

Group Two this is if I'm feeling depressed about how things are going and need a lighter pick-me-up or want to slow things down a bit

Happy Jazz

Louis Armstrong

A little Michael Buble

Group Three this is kind of my alternative to meditation music, when I want wordless songs with a more repetitive beat

Spanish Flamenco

I'm totally boring. I asked DH (who has been playing piano since he was 8) to compile all of his favorite songs to play (because that's what I always hear!) on the Ipod for the birth. So our birth mix mostly consists of classical music, Chopin mainly. And he's a total nerd, so there are a few songs from video games like Zelda and Final Fantasy in there, LOL.. lol.gif

I loved having some music that was nice to sing along to last time....especially Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Zap Mama.  A little Paolo Conte here and there too....and some random Johnny Cash.  It was a fun playlist.

Unfortunately, since my last labor was sooooo long, DH got really really tired of it and probably never wants to hear it again.  :)   So I need to mix it up a bit more this time.

Gunter, that's interesting about the Gayatri Mantra being used for births.  I'm curious to know if there are any other good traditional birth songs out there that you all have heard of....

grateful mama to DD1, born before the robins came, 2010.  excited to welcome a little man into the world in early February 2012! kid.gif

1blueheron- there is a really reat Blessingway CD out there by Copperwoman, I think.  It has songs on it that I think are great for birthing.  We sing Amazing Grace to our Christian families sometimes, per their requests.  And, we sometimes sing Allah Akbar per our Muslim families' requests...we remain silent when the dad whispers into the babe's ear right after birth though.

I am a huge fan of Mason Jennings singing "Be Here Now" through my last labor.  Well, "Raindrops on the Kitchen Floor" is my current fave for this mix by him.  Oh, so great for laboring and birthing from the beats to the words.  Just right.

Would love to hear some other fave songs from our DDC!?

Mine is SO different! I have some Ramones, Journey, The Cure, Damien Rice, Bright Eyes, Led Zepplin, Crowded House, Smashing Pumpkins - basically my favourite songs orangized into a loud and a quiet playlist. I've heard that music you can really groove to is best, but I'm a white girl with no rhythm, I don't groove, so I figured rocking out would work better for me.

My one rule is that the songs lyrics can't be negative. So Joy Division and Nine Inch Nails are pretty much out. wink1.gif

The Clash
The Avett Brothers
Tom Waits
OutKast
Mumford and Sons
John Prine
John Hartford
Phil Ochs
The Two Man Gentleman Band
Johnny Cash
Carrie Nations
Bruce Springsteen
Gorillaz
Citizen Cope
Sonvolt
Billy Bragg and Wilco
Gomez
REM
They Might Be Giants
Feist

There are a few things I wanted to download, but Im just kind of ready to be done with everything and just be okay with the fact that 4 non blondes just arent going to make it onto the list. Honestly, I remember about two songs from DD's playlist, I just didnt give a crap what was playing.

Holly and David partners.gif

Adaline love.gif (3/20/10), and Charlie brokenheart.gif (1/26/12- 4/10/12) and our identical  rainbow1284.gif  twins Callie and Wendy (01/04/13)

Most of my music are sentimental favorites from when my husband and I were dating...many were used at our wedding during the cocktail hour.  They make me happy and most importantly...calm! :)  Lots of David Grey, Dave Matthews Band, Ray LaMontagne, John Butler Trio, Keith Urban, Grace Potter, Damien Rice and then a collection called "Reflections of Nature" with lots of Ocean sounds.  Not sure if I'll use it during labor, depends on how zippy things are...never had time to even get the music out during previous labors!  I think that this time being a home birth and having the six kiddos in the house, having the ability to put headphones on and listen to music will help me focus...that's the theory at least! :)

Hypnobabies!

Anthony Robbins Sacred Blessings CD (includes Devi Prayer, Gayatri Mantra and others)

Jonathan Goldman - Frequencies, Sounds of Healing

I have an Ocean sounds CD

R. Carlos Nakai -  Canyon Trilogy.

I have been listening to a lot of these at night to help me relax and sleep. I am hoping they will have the same effect during labor!

I found a ton of yoga/meditation type music and put them on my iPhone for the dock pad speaker. I didn't want to listen to regular music with singing, etc. I just want to be in my zen place to help me focus on working through the pain.

i so agree about no negative lyrics.  i looked up the lyrics to songs DH liked or were recommended to me just to make sure!  and, totally whatever works for you is what is best.

You reminded me about Citizen Cope, Fleet Foxes, The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, and Feist (first concert of my last pregnancy!).  Thank you!  I, too have a song from each labor that stick out as my one labor song for it.

I will have to look up the Anthony Robbins CD.  I cannot imagine not hearing the Gayatri Mantra at birth but it's unavailable on the music service we are using and i don't have it on CD or anywhere else.  Thankfully, we have our voices!!!  My oldest is so conditioned to sing it at the sign of a crowning babe and her lil sis knows the words now, too.  Maybe I should send it out to my birth team to see if they want to learn the words!?

I love the Anthony Robbins CD... really beautiful. And I was thinking (after watching "Orgasmic Birth") that some "sexy" music would be kinda helpful too?!  I just have to figure out what that is for me!!

I'll be using Hypnobabies too. I hadn't even thought of extra music to help keep me relaxed. I may have to go look up some of these cds on your list and do some ordering before it's too late geek.gif

Yeh, i suspect i'll be just doing hypno, but i seem to remember getting to a point last time where i just couldn't listen anymore... so these may come in handy then. or in very early labor when i'm just trying to relax and figure out what's going on. i buy most of mine from amazon - the mp3s i can download immediately. they have good samples to listen to also.
