Hi Ladies,

I am growing increasingly frustrated and worried, as I am due in April and none of the homebirth midwives that service my area in Brooklyn are available.

I was born 29 years ago at home with a wonderful midwife and all my brothers and sisters were also born via homebirth. The thing that has me most frustrated, (and I know this is unreasonable and selfish, but I am hormonal!) is that in NYC the rate of homebirth has spiked due to the documentary the Business of being born, and most of the women who have booked these midwives had never heard of homebirth before. I know it's amazing that so many new babies are being born at home and that the documentary has really opened women's eyes to the options around them, but most that I talk to here in the city don't really know anything about it other than it's the hip new celebrity thing to do.

I have been waiting my whole life to be able to birth at home, and have been very active in Homebirth Midwifery rights especially

during the period last year when Midwives in NYC almost lost the right to practice. I rallied everyone I knew to write to our legislature, congressperson and anyone who would listen to make it legal for Midwives to practice without a Hospital undersigner.

Now I can't find a Midwife to take me, and I am terrified of having to deliver in a hospital. I already have my birthtub purchased, and I feel so let down that I won't be able to continue this amazing tradition passed down to me by my own Mother.

Sorry for venting, but I am just so frustrated!

I'm so sorry, how frustrating! Are the midwives unavailable because they are on holidays or because their practices are full?

Maybe you could try the Midwives board here on MDC and see if anyone knows anyone.

Do the midwives keep a waitlist? Sometimes people move, sometimes their pregnancy gets complicated and they have to transfer out of care, and sadly sometimes women miscarry. If there is no waitlist I would call all the midwives again every month or so and see if they have space for you and plead your case! In my practice we will often take an extra client if she is planning a homebirth, because we know she's likely not going to get that service elsewhere. Good luck!

I live in brooklyn near the park and didn't have any trouble getting in, who are you trying to see?  It surprises me that they would all be taken?  I have had Marcy, Joan, and Kristen all highly recommended to me, I emailed Marcy and she was able to set something up right away.  Hope you can find someone soon, that does seem very stressful.

I am assuming you are aware of this link for finding homebirth midwives in NYC since you are active in the community.  I wish I could help more but I have only been here a year and am just starting to really get acquainted with the homebirth community here.  Have you tried the AP brooklyn yahoo group?  They might know some ins and outs?

I don't have suggestions for midwives, as I'm not from that area, but I hope it's resolved soon - it sucks to feel so stressed out in the early days......

I did, however come across this blog and thought I'd share in case it interests any of you - from the little I've read so far it seems thoughtful and thought-provoking......http://amotherisborn.com/

Hey ladies, good news! A midwife in Williamsburg will be able to take me in April, it's a bit of a hike from where we are, but I will take it!

Love it when things work out for the best, and thank you so much to everyone who had suggestions and support!

:)

I was wondering if brooklyn home birth midwives accept insurance?

I will be delivering at home in Brooklyn with Miriam Schwarzchild (I'm due the end of April/early May). She takes insurance, in fact as far as I know they all do. They're all out of network but their billing people work with the insurance companies to get an exception since there are no in network homebirth midwives in NYC.
