Yes, the mothering community is a bit "crunchier" than most and the folks here have a focus on natural living, but everyone's definition of that is different. It isn't mandatory to have natural vaginal childbirth at home, cloth diaper, co-sleep, babywear, eat only certain foods, be anti-vax, or even BF to be a part of the mothering community. Yes, most people on here do some or most of things, but we all have different ways of parenting and living a "natural" life and that is part of what makes the community interesting.

Somewhat in moss' defense, I just wanted to say that things have changed a lot around MDC in the last year or two.  I can see where she might be surprised by the number of people getting the flu shot.  There are a lot of topics that were once "one way or the highway" that are more accepting of diverse opinions now.   I don't think she meant to come across as judgmental, its just one of those topics that people have strong feelings about.

I totally agree that people's experiences shape their choices, so of course we're all going to come to different ones.  That's one of the things that makes the world great.  orngbiggrin.gif

i hope that you read the links i posted

and i hope that you dont judge your patients who dont vax.  as a public health nurse you are probably the nurse who is giving out hundreds (thousands?) of shots during flu season.  :(  hopefully you at least make sure that your pregnant patients are getting shots with the least amount of mercury/aluminum/etc possible.

i'm sorry that you had the experience of caring for a family who lost an infant.  i cant even begin to imagine the heartbreak they went thru.  i'm willing to bet that there are other factors besides immunization status that affected the outcome of that baby though

fwiw, most of the nurses i know do not get the flushot.  it is wildly ineffective.  the first person i ever heard antivax opinions from was, in fact, a nurse who was against the flushot.

Moss~  I could give you a thousand research studies from reputable sources to show another side.  That's not the point, we could go back and forth on that all day.  The point is-- people are entitled to their own beliefs.  I always encourage my clients to do thier own research.  I have had many classes on how to evaluate research and I refer them to reputable sources as not everything you read on the internet is true.  It's okay to discuss all options on the Mothering forums-- there is no "right" way to be a mother-- it's about knowledge and making the best decisions for your own family.

Oh, and also, I never judge any of the families I work with-- and I work with all kinds.  As long as they care for and love their children-- that's what I'm looking for.  Are you judging people by what they choose for their family?
