Home Expense and Utility Assistance

Weatherization Assistance – Helps families make their homes more energy efficient to reduce energy bills.
LIHEAP – Low income energy assistance program
WARM program – Helps low income families with utility bills, contact your local utility for more information.
Tax Credit and Exemption Programs – This is a link for MD, may be available elsewhere
Homeownership Preservation Foundation (888-995-HOPE) – Provides counseling and a plan of action for families experiencing threatened foreclosure, can also refer you to free services for other financial issues, such as credit card debt.
Emergency Financial Assistance for Housing Program (Florida) - provides a one-time payment of up to $400 to families who are totally without shelter or face the loss of shelter because of non-payment of rent or mortgage.
Safelink - Provides free cells phones and airtime to low-income individuals (may not be available in all states).
Ontario Rent Bank Network – Rent and utility help for residents of Ontario
Database for state incentives for renewable energy and energy efficiency

Modest Needs – Provides grants to families in need of financial assistance
Emergency Financial Assistance (Wake County, NC) – Provides assistance with rent, security deposit, utilities, prescriptions, eye care, caskets, and bus tickets as well as information and referrals for families in emergency situations.
Army Emergency Relief – Provides financial assistance to soldiers and their families
Air Force Aid Society – Provides financial assistance to airmen and their families

CAF: Emergency Financial Assistance - CAF provides one-time emergency financial assistance for necessities such as utilities, rent, burial assistance, etc.

Coupons for Groceries and Household Goods (Canada)
WIC - provides Federal grants to States for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.

*Contact your energy company for information on a medical allowance for “life support equipment”, as well as heating and cooling assistance needed for medical reasons. This can include reasons such as asthma for children who require a nebulizer.

Volunteer Services

American Red Cross – Assistance during and after a disaster
Wish Upon a Hero – Free online community for giving and receiving help
Time Bank – Check this directory to see if you have a Time Bank in your area. By giving up some of your time you earn Time Dollars that then lets you get help from someone else you need - like child care, car or home repairs, wellness services, transportation, etc. All it costs is a little bit of your time.

General Assistance for Low Income Families - Please contact your local muncipality or check their website for available assistance. This an example is what is available.
CareerOneStop - Tools for job-seekers in addition to Workforce Investment Act (WIA) /Individual training Accounts (ITA) providers by state.
Michigan Works - Training programs in "high demand or emerging sector occupations." Eligible if unemployed or received layoff notice or make less than $40K a year.
Michigan No Worker Left Behind - Helps provide training for new careers in high demand occupations, available to anyone who is unemployed, received notice of job termination, or for employed individuals whose family income is less than $40K a year.
Resources for those facing natural disaster, also lists many organizations that offer help for low-income families
