So, every year, around this time...well, I'll just spit it out...

You've found it...

:joyThe famous ROVING Holiday Helper thread! "joy.gif

Perhaps you’ve heard about a program we have here at Mothering called the Holiday Helper Program? Since 2003, Mothering members have been reaching out to each other around the holidays to make sure that families in need (FINs), here at Mothering, get the chance to celebrate the season as well.

Want to help a Family in Need?

Here are some ways to help:

1. Make a list of what you have available. Gently used toys or books or clothes? Are you willing to go shopping to pick out a special gift for a young child or another mama? Check the "Master Needs List" or the individual family profiles in the Families in Need forum. If you have items to offer that don't appear on the "Master Needs List," please make a post listing the items in the "I Have Available" thread. Items provided may be new or used; gently used items are very welcome as long as they are in good condition.

2. Spread the word about that the Holiday Helper Program. Some ways to do that:

  • Post and suggest a title for this thread. Something intriguing, something outrageous, something funny, something that pique your interest and make you open the thread. We will rotate thread titles as we move this thread from forum to forum. We want to generate interest in this thread.
  •
  • Bump up this thread when you see it.
  •
  • Add the Holiday Helper smile to your signature:hh2.gif

More information is posted in the Holiday Helper forum; check it out!

This is my favorite part of MDC!  It always puts me in the holiday spirit.  Come on over and take a peak at what we've got going on.

P.S. We already have some silly, fun, intriguing thread titles.  Can you find them as we rove?  :mischief

Do you take people in Canada? Just wondering about supporting the program from from Canada without crazy shipping costs.

Yes, we support families in Canada. Currently, we don't have any families from Canada on the list of families, but the application period is still open, so I hope that any families in need from Canada or the US or elsewhere will join.

For those helping, if you're not in the country in which the family you want to support is located, a few things we've heard from other helpers in the past:

--Often you can send gift cards with no shipping costs, so that might be an option to avoid crazy shipping costs and still support a family.

--You can sometimes order directly from a company in the country that the family is located in and the shipping costs will be less. (So, say, if you order from Amazon in the US to a family in the US, the shipping might be less than ordering from Amazon in the UK to a family in the US.)

--For gently used items, if you ship via ground between the US and Canada (either direction), the shipping costs is usually much lower than shipping via air. It takes longer, but saves on shipping costs. (If you are shipping by ground between two countries, please mention this in a PM to the facilitator for the family (these are noted on the FIN profiles) or PM QueenOfTheMeadow and me; this way we can make a note that shipping might take a little longer and save worrying about items taking a little longer to arrive.)

--If others have tips on shipping, please post them.

I fell for the anchovies line. Good one. We are in Mexico and don't do online stuff. We give away our things to families we know already and a local non profit does Christmas boxes, that we donate too. What an awesome thing to do mothering.

You could move it to one of the breastfeeding forums and call it: "Oh my I have gone up 5 cup sizes!"
