our sweet surprise UC baby
our little one made a surprise entrance two weeks ago at 37+3. it was a precipitous labor that was less than an hour from the first real contraction to holding our babe. I was lucky DH made it home as he was 30 min away at work. we were lucky our DD1 was out of town with my mom as I got very, very loud.
I had lots of pre-labor signs but blew them off as lots of mommas have them and I thought I'd make it to my due date as I did with DD1. I dropped about a week before, been having super strong BH starting at around 20 weeks. the day I had her I was cramping and spotting a little, but figured that was just the aftereffects of sex. I tried taking a bath and drinking some extra water to ease the cramping. cramps were not too bad and did not come at regular intervals, there were no reasons for us to go into the hospital.
when contractions started they hit hard. this labor was a lot more intense than my first. I couldn't move through them and was screaming so loud my ears popped. once DH got home it got a lot more manageable - he helped me into the tub and poured water on my back and talked me through them. once my water broke I could tell I was done with the transition. we called the midwife at the hospital and she said we could come in - I said there's no way we'll make it another 40 min - thankfully DH did not make me get out of the tub. on the next huge contraction the babe just shot out into the water, I didn't push or was even aware that my body was pushing. she did not cry but was breathing right away. we called 911, the paramedics cut the cord once they got there a few min later and told us we could drive ourselves to the hospital. I didn't tear or bleed and the babe was just perfect.
I had a feeling I may be early and the labor may be really quick but wrote it off as a common pregnancy concern. I did read up on emergency childbirth and discussed it with my doula and midwives. I am thankful for the women of this group that regard childbirth as natural and normal and some actually choosing to UC - it helped us stay calm and have a beautiful - though rather unplanned - birth of our daughter.
thank you all for your support and wisdom and sharing your stories. sending gentle labor and birth thoughts your way.
