Perinatal asessment?

Hi ladies! I was just looking at my appointment calendar given to me by my RN and saw that she scheduled an appointment for me in the perinatal assessment center? I don't remember her explaining what it was and was wondering if any of you had an idea of what business I'd have there seeing as I'm not perinatal? I feel like she might have mentioned something about info on genetic testing but I'm not sure.

My understanding of the word "perinatal" is that it's used pretty loosely--you can see a perinatal specialist throughout pregnancy, for example. (A friend of mine saw a perinatal specialist as her primary caregiver during both of her high-risk pregnancies.) I *think* the connotation seems to have shifted over the years to be about risk management--genetic testing/counseling, high-risk care, etc etc. So if I were referred to a perinatal assessment and remembered something about genetic testing, yes, I'd assume that's what that was. Nothing wrong with calling to double-check, though. I wish I'd asked more "stupid questions" like that early on in my pregnancy--tell me what this appointment is, tell me what to expect when I come in, etc. I know people have already made some (TOTALLY ASININE, ahem) assumptions about you and what your care is going to be like, and my best advice to you is to ignore them and ask what you want to know.

I have officially crossed the line into offering unsolicited advice here, so now I'll stop. But you deserve to have a clear line of sight on your own appointments!

No no no, you aren't crossing any lines! Thanks for that!
