20 weeks and had my anatomy scan. Baby has a ventricular septal defect (a hole in the heart between the ventricles). The doctor recommended a cardiac echo to investigate the hole more, as well as amnio because VSD is associated with Down Syndrome. I'm devastated and trying really really hard not to freak out or cry.
We had the anatomy scan this morning at 8.30am and that's when we were told about the VSD. At 4pm, the pediatric cardiologist managed to squeeze us in for a cardiac echogram. Results are: the baby's heart is normal. The previous result was a false positive. Based on this result, he said that additional testing like the amnio would be unnecessary.
For now, I'm going to believe this good news, because the echogram is more detailed than the ultrasound and the results were read by a doctor who specializes in the heart. I'm still feeling really overwhelmed and shaky. It has been such an emotional rollercoaster of a day.
wow, @comber, that's such a great news!
No reason not to believe the pediatric cardiologist, especially since you are in the just the right period of pregnancy to them to diagnose (or not diagnose) any problem with baby's heart.
From the emotional side, I sympathize deeply, such a rollercoaster!
Hugs!
Oh my goodness, what a rollercoaster. Glad you got the all clear--and that your time for worry was short. (sorry you had it at all, though) My sonographer had a hard time getting a good angle on the pulmonary artery and we were there for an extra 15 minutes or so cajoling babe into shifting so she could get a view that confirmed the valve was fully formed. Even that was a worrisome 15 minutes for me; I can't imagine all day with potentially more devastating news to consider. :eep Breath:: Sending you calm, @comber.
Thank you for the empathy, everyone. Yes, I'm so so so thankful that we were able to get the good news on the same day. This way I wasn't panicking for days (or weeks) and could avoid more invasive testing like the amnio.
Thanks, @Voondrop. I'm also glad and very relieved that it was quickly resolved. I'm still feeling a bit shaken over the whole thing, so I'm making a point of taking it easy this weekend to destress.
Glad you were able to check it out so quickly. We had a level 2 ultrasound last month and the doctor believes he saw a VSD in our baby as well, however she was so wiggly he could never get a really good look at the heart, so we go back at the beginning of August for another look. The doc that did my ultrasound did not mention echocardiogram, so I'm glad to know about that. He did mention amniocentecis (no thank you!) but we are waiting to see what this next ultrasound tells us, as it is not confirmed to be a VSD at this point.
Thanks, @bellesmom. @jaimezee, I'm hoping for the best for you and your little baby. This is such scary news to receive. Hugs.
