Hi Mamas,

I need some advice. When we TTC our DD, I was in a big hurry and so we DTD every day for 10 days around the time of ovulation and got pregnant in 1 month. And I ended up with the nasty UTI.

Now we're TTC baby #2 and since our DD is 28 months and we both work full time, I think DTD every day for 10 days is kinda out of the question. I don't exactly want to go the route of not stressing/not testing at all, because I would like to conceive this month or next, if possible.

Do you think the ovulation tests are accurate and would you recommend them? Is there some other way to be focused about TCC without it being the sole focus of my life?

Thanks for any and all advice!!!!

Amy, proud Mama to my girls Natalie (12/7/06) and Miranda (2/9/10).

i know your feeling. I tried the opks and they DID NOT work at all. Here I am 5 months later. OPKs are not for everyone, or so they tell me...

I tried OPK when TTC my son. After a few months i stopped because for me they were not cut and dry enough with the results. I did temp charting, etc for 11 months with nothing. Then i bought a pre-owned CBFM online and got PG the first month using it! I used it again for my second son and it took only two months. I plan to use it again this time. I know they are pricey but for me, at least, the detection was very accurate and "cut and dry". So for me I highly recommend them. Good luck to you!!!

What does "CBFM" stand for?

When we conceived DS, I didn't chart, didn't do any sort of temp charting, just was told by my OB that you usually ovulate around 11 - 13 days after the 1st day of your period - when we found out I was pg with DS, I did the math and we were right on target. We were shocked that it happened so quickly.....I've been doing online observations of when I would be O'ing and they've been pretty close, but I may just stick with what worked for us the first time.....but am curious to find out about the CBFM.

You can get a + opk and not O. You should chart temps if you want to know when you O. Also just because you got pg so easy with #1 doesn't mean it will happen like that with #2.

I am doing artificial insemination so I have to make sure I get the timing right on. I was frustrated with opks when I first started using them...it seemed I never got a positive but I was definitely O'ing. Then I started following the instructions more carefully and being patient and they work spot on for me now. When they are positive there is no doubt and so far they have been very accurate. I just buy the internet cheapies too...

Nevermind - I just answered my own question on the CBFM and yes, those things are very expensive! My goodness.

I wasn't trying to imply it would work so easily the next time but it did for me both times. So all i am saying is that I believe it gives you a better chance of conceiving each month by accurately displaying your fertile days. It may take me a long time with #3 but took 1 and 2 months with my first two. But i know every person is different. Just wanted to offer my experience. They are not so expensive if you buy them pre-owned also. Charting temps just didn't do it for me. I loved the simplicity of the CBFM.

Just realized you might of been talking about the original poster about conceiving #2. Sorry. lol

If you don't want to chart and you don't want to do OPKs, I would say you should DTD whenever you have good EWCM.

I hope you get pregnant right away... but you really hit the baby jackpot last time! It is statistically unusual to get pregnant the first month trying - even in perfect health conditions and perfect BD timing. So I'm saying this just to say ... don't count on getting pregnant right away. It may take a few months. For most couples, it takes several months (6 months is average, right?)

Mama and co-parent to our beautiful DS (08/08) and our mighty strong DD (04/10) . Life is good.

I want to second the watching for cervical mucus suggestion, your vaginal discharge you'll notice when you wipe gets more and more slippery and abundant as you get closer to O, the whole time it's present and maybe a day after it goes away you could very well be fertile. I also want to add that DTD every other day may work just as well as every day, giving him a chance to recharge a bit ya know? That timing method your doctor told you about without watching your symptoms could be incredibly off if you aren't right on average. I mean, I would always O between days 19-22 of my 30-35 day cycles.

Paying attention to EWCM worked first month trying for both dd1 and dd2. Took four or five or six months with dd3 - but I was in my 30s then so maybe that affected it.

And definitely every other day, not every day. Every day results in a lower sperm count, and since you have 72 hours every other day works just as well.

An anecdotal method:

i conceived ds with a condom and dd on birth control (due to thyroid problems changing when i o.... and didnt know it)

so what seems to be a foolproof method to me is try NOT to conceive... since now that i'm actually trying TO i'm not getting very lucky.

I hope you get a chuckle out of this, as thats all it's meant for.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice, everyone! I know we were extremely lucky the first time around, so I was already preparing myself for this time to be more challenging.

I think I could get on board with the every other day schedule And I'll keep watch of the mucus, too!

Hugs and thanks!!!

Every other day worked for my first dd. I wasn't temping or using OPK's for her. My OB/GYN had told me to try every other day from CD10 through CD20 and that worked for us in 3 cycles. GL!
