Hmm I'm trying to understand all of this. DS is 12 weeks and we EBF and co sleep. Is there any way I might be ovulating? Should I get one of those ovulation testers? Should I chart??

Can anybody confirm this?  It's so hard when you are co-sleeping and your little one is waking up all the time to comfort nurse!

With my 9 month old DS, I can get this number of hours-- but, usually when it is from about 10pm to 1 am.  This is because he sleeps in his crib for the first part of the night, then when he wakes around 1 am I go and get him and bring him into bed with us-- so before I get him, I take my temp. Then, the marathon of on/off comfort nursing for the next several hours begins, until it is time to get up!  So I'm not able to get a temp for my 'normal' waking time in the morning (before, when I was ttc, I set my alarm for 6 am 7 days a week).  Adding to the issues I'm having is that I'm temping only if I remember... I'm in such a fog because of all the interrupted sleep, so I'm getting temps for every 2nd night or so. I should add that there is the odd time when my DS has slept longer, so instead of 1 am I'm taking my temp at 3 or 4 am.

I need advice on how to approach temping, when it is like this.  Does it still work, for the most part, regardless of you take your temp at 1 am or 4 am?  Or does it need to be at the same time every morning?  I know that skipping the odd temp is okay, but what about a large number of days?  Is it still possible to get an overall picture of what is happening in my cycle?  If I don't get a BFP this cycle, it will be my 4th ppaf.

TenzinsMama, I used to temp with insomnia before getting pregnant and frequently took temperatures at 2am. I found that my 2am and 7 am temperatures weren't that different and I still saw a clear shift. I also found that tracking CM and cervical position made things even clearer. I haven't started temping again yet (need to get a new thermometer) but I've been tracking CM and CP and I also see a longer EWCM phase and a shorter LP (9-10 days). I'm glad to hear that it's common when nursing. I've now had 6 or 7 PPAFs (I lost count).

The length of my cycles is about the same (a day or two longer sometimes) but my LP has only been 9 days at the most. I never had LP issues before so I'm assuming it's a nursing/prolactin thing. My doc seems to agree. However, I have a req. for a 7DPO progesterone test just to see what's going on. I have also had 4 pp AFs. As for temping, I'm not sure about taking your temp in the middle of the night...I think doing it at a consistent time of the day is key so maybe it would work for you to take it at 1am every night. You could always give it a try and see if you detect a shift. I also don't get a large stretch in the morning, we co-sleep so I just decided to try taking my temp at 7am(ish) every morning.

Speaking of temping...for those of you who are chart pros...can you have a look at my chart please? FF gave me crosshairs (dotted because of ewcm after possible O) and I too can see a shift (not a strong one but there..)...especially if I disregard the 2 high temps earlier in my cycle. What do you all think? I've read that ewcm after O is common when nursing....thoughts or experiences on that? I will be 7dpo tomorrow if I did O when FF is saying I did...I'm wondering if I should go for my progesterone test??

Happy Mother's Day!!

Carmen - I also think that you O'd near CD31 which makes you 3DPO.

ZakareyasMama - I didn't get my PPAF until DS was 10 months and I hear a lot of people get it pretty late, so I don't know what to tell you, if you start charting now or using tests it may still be a while till you O. Until my first PPAF came I had no idea what was going on with my body as my discharge was different.

bentlaj11 that is a true Big Fat Positive - thank you for sharing the picture, it was fun to see! Sticky vibes to you.

I was thinking CD31 as well...I guess FF (and me) are just confused about the positive opk I got on CD27...it was definitely positive. And then I got the negative on CD30. I think if AF doesn't show until CD40(ish) and my temp stays up then I did O on CD31. If I remove the positive opk, FF moves O to CD31. Yikes, can't wait for this cycle to be over!

Thanks!!!

Just checking in.  There seems to be a lot of exciting activity going around!  Congratulations on the good news to so many of you, and maybe we'll have some too some day.

DD has now been going all night without nursing for one week, and hopefully we'll be able to keep this up.  No real fertile signs yet (though I had a lot of cramping about 7 months ago, the last time she was sleeping most of the night), but I'm taking vitex and a B-vitamin complex to see if they can help.  I have PCOS and never had any periods before, and I don't want to wean completely and go back to clomid if I can help it.

I'm with the rest of you, wanting to enjoy every minute of my beautiful daughter, but wanting some siblings for her, too!

ZakareyasMama - I think it's possible you're ovulating, but pretty unlikely.  EBF is supposed to be 98% effective birth control for the first 6 months or so, but it sounds like there are a few people who start ovulating really early in spite of breastfeeding,  Do you have any fertile signs?  You could start charting any time, but I probably wouldn't spend money on tests until you see some fertile CM.

Good luck!

add me to waiting to o.

started having some ewcm yesterday, so here's to hoping it happens this week! i haven't been charting this time around, b/c my DS (15 months) still wake up frequently at night, so i can't be bothered to track my temps. this is our first month actively ttc. we didn't "try" with our DS, we were CTA, and broke the rules just a little bit and i got pregnant (we were happy though! we were about to start trying anyway). This whole actually trying thing is a bit nerve wracking to me, even though we just started!

good luck ladies!

The OPK does confuse things some.  It is true that you can ovulate up to 3 days before or after peak day, and it's really hard to say where you fall on that spectrum.  To be honest, I don't know how accurate the OPKs that you are using are.  I have seen a lot of OPK's (on other people's charts, I have never used them myself) be wrong, and I personally trust the fertility signs more, even though I know they only narrow ovulation down to a few days. The good news is that if you are actually ovulating before your fertility signs are showing that you are ovulating, that means your LP's are longer than you think.  You could always split the difference and go in tomorrow or the next day.  Do they have a certain way that they are expecting you to measure DPO?  I just know that in charting, we usually consider DPO to be days of temperature rise, and in the mucus only methods, they consider it to be days after peak day, so by both of those methods, you are now 4 DPO.  The only way you can really be 100% sure is ultrasound.  Otherwise, there is some guess work, and you can narrow it down to a few days, but not beyond that.

TenzinsMama - I've heard 3 and 4 hrs, but many women can still see a shift even when not getting consistent sleep.  My son, while older than yours, also starts the night in his own bed then comes in to ours later.  He normally comes in at 7am or so, so I started setting my alarm for 6:30 to temp and then sleeping until he woke up to join us (or until we wake up for the day, if he sleeps all night in his room).  So, if your son usually wakes at 1am, maybe you should set an alarm for 12:30 or so and try to take your temp then, and go back to sleep until your son wakes.  Maybe try to take it again when you wake for the day (if it's a pretty consistent time), and have two charts going for a cycle to see which temp time gives you the best results.  Sorry AF crashed your mother's Day party! hug2.gif

agmi - Welcome back!

ZakareysMama - Like a PP said, you are most likely not fertile; if you want to be sure, I would skip expensive OPKs and monitors (since, most likely, neither would show fertility for a long while) and just temp and check CP and CM.  FWIW, my DS was EBF to 6mo, BF with solids since then, and I got my first  PPAF between 15 and 18m PP (It's been so long I don't remember exactly, lol).

bentlaj11 - That is one beautiful BFP!!  Thanks for the eye candy, lol!

marinak1977 - I hope you're feeling better!

ericaness - Excuse the possible dumb question, but what does CTA stand for?  We are also new to this TTC thing, it is pretty nerve wracking!   Althoug not as much as when I was supporting my sister's TTC journey....I hed ZERO control over that, lol.

AFM:  DS has been sick, and the two of us have basically been tossing and turning at night and then taking many cat naps on the couch (and watching the boob tube duck.gif) during the day, so I haven't been temping, or DTD.  So here's hoping I have NOT O'd yet!

Thanks so much for your input :) I actually asked for the progesterone test....my GP said sure, we can check it out....get it done 7 days after you ovulate. I guess because we were successful getting pregnant with DD she trusts that I know what I'm doing ;) So, the prog. test isn't that important, I just wanted to rule out anything beyond nursing causing my short LP. I actually have the CBFM so I will try that again next cycle I guess. It's so strange for me to feel so in the dark about my ovulation because my cycles were so predictable before, just by CM and temp (I used opks but didn't rely on them as I sometimes got negatives when I know I O'd)....but my body is a whole new animal after giving birth!

Carmen358 I was using the CBFM and gave it up infavor of plain old OPKs.  I found a few problems with it that make it unhelpful for me while breastfeeding:  my estrogen is so low that it gave me "high" readings for 2 weeks 1 cycle with no peak (darn near wore DH out) and in the subsequent 3 cycles, read peak just a few days before AF.  One on my charted cycles FF called O on CD16 and the monitor picked CD22 as peak.  For me, the algorithm using both estrogen & LH, was problematic during breastfeeding.  I subsequently found that I've been having anovulatory cycles (serum progesterone 1.0 7dp +opk/thermal shift 2 cycles now) and that my LH surge is less than 24 hours.  I conceived my son on my first cycle with CBFM so I was devastated to find that it was no help this time around.  Also, I've had pp cycles from 22 to 34 days and was finding myself mid-box because of all the tests it asked for.  All that said, I met the criteria for "ecological breastfeeding" and we're trying to cut back enough for me to o but my LO and I are really sad about this.  My LO is bottom 25% for weight but very healthy... I thought by nursing him all the time I was helping him get a lot of calories.

I'm going to an ND for herbs & acupuncture this week and an RE Monday to see what can be done short of weaning.

Wow, jaronsmom. Sounds incredibly frustrating to have so many things pointing to O but not actually O'ing! Thanks for the feedback re: the CBFM...I've already bought the sticks but I may or may not use them this time around. By the way, how do you know how short your LH surge is?

My cycle length is the only thing that is the same as before having DD (well, except for this cycle!!).

Do you chart online? Would you mind sharing?

carmen, AMEN on the "body is a whole new animal after giving birth"!!!!  I also have a short LP, it seems, but am only charting PP cycle number 2 right now.

ZakeryasMama, I have to agree with everyone else that you are likely not fertile.  I had my baby 11/11/09 and got my first PPAF 4/2/11.  I guess that was almost 17 months before I *may* have ovulated for the first time (you don't necessarily ovulate before that first PPAF, either, or for a few cycles after it comes back).  Enjoy your little guy!  :)

Those who use OPKs....they have cheapies at the dollar store and I bet you can find them even cheaper online...it is worth it?  Or is charting basically just as good?  I am not too great about charting CP and CM, just temps, so maybe it would be helpful?

Hope everyone gets over the sickies they have had...it's Spring, no more sickies, OK!??

Birthed a beautiful baby boy, Ethan, 11/11/09.

carmen358 - Hopefully it doesn't take you long to get used to the new way your body is communicating with you!

jaronsmom - Best of luck at your appointments!

AFM....my CP was MM Monday night and HS last night; DS was feeling better and slept through, but DH and I basically passed out as soon as we hit those sheets, lol.  Next chance for DTD will be after 10pm tonight.  Hopefully that CP is a good sign and tonight will be a good time for BD.  I only check CP sporadically, so I don't know my personal pattern regarding that.  I'm going to try to start checking every night, though.

Thanks Bugglette!  I should just be moved to waiting to O, then leave me there until the labs are back, LOL!

Carmen358-- you may be fine with CBFM.  I had the faintest line on the OPK test so I kept checking about every 5 or 6 hours.  My LH surge dissipated after about 18 hours after I detected it.  Alternatively, my cycle may have been every bit as weird as the monitor said it was.  Totally possible.

I have so many things happening in my life that if any single conflict/problem resolved, I'd probably o just fine and conceive.  My MW reassured me that the proof that I can have a healthy pregnancy & baby is the one I've got in my arms.  I'm forcing myself & my family to give me a little space sometime during each week.  I signed up for a yoga class, I went last night to a mom's night with one of my mom's groups.  Acute stressors are supposed to delay ovulation but now I'm wondering if my chronic stressors have led to my anovulation.  Maybe this is the time & space I need to take to let a baby-to-be know that there's room in my life for it.

I haven't been visiting this forum in a while, but I have learned a few things from last cycle that will let me chime in on a couple of questions. My dd still wakes up a few times at night and I never get close to 3 hrs before temping in the morning, but I'm still getting a thermal shift and sometimes my temps are so consistent they will be exactly the same for days at a time, just as they were before conceiving so it is worth trying even if you have interrupted sleep.

Also, I gave up the nightweaning about a week after my first pp ovulation last cycle, but even though we are nursing again at night, I O'd on cd 24 this month which is only a few days after my old normal, so I guess the difference was taking the vitex (or maybe it was just time?).

On sore nipples- I experienced very sore nipples a few days around when I o'd this cycle. Then, after the temp shift it went away. I guess it was the hormones, so maybe  the sore nipples could also be from ovulation and not just pregnancy/AF.

I think we did a better job timing the bd, so I am looking forward to POAS this weekend. Right now I am 7 dpo and feeling good!

Congrats to all the BFP! and good luck to all of you.

Oh, I guess I'm here now.  lol.  Been a while since I've been on MDC at all, but I finally agreed to stop preventing.  (DH had decided to stop preventing long ago, but I wasn't ready, LOL).  And I'm still not "ready" ready, so we're not really "TTC" (as in charting ALL signs, timing intercourse every other day like clockwork, etc.), but we'll just BD whenever we both feel like it.  Maybe a baby will happen, maybe not, but I'm okay with either way.  :)

New to the group.  My chart is here.

And I am currently waiting to O.

Updated to here!

jaronsmom - I'm glad you are taking the time to take care of yourself; you deserve it!

Harmony96 - Welcome back!!  I look forward to getting to know you better!

Update on my sister - She was in the ER last night because she started bleeding; beta was 100, US showed poss threatened PG. she has an appointment for follow up beta tomorrow, but she started passing clots this morning mecry.gif  @ approx 5 weeks

Also, I KNEW I was about to O, but had to finish my knitting project first...and of course I stayed up so late that we didn't DTD and I had a pretty big temp spike this morning and my CM had dried up duh.gif    We did DTD right after I took my temp, and I KNOW that once your temp rises it's too late....but I can't help having a little hope, which I know will just make it harder when AF comes greensad.gif   I just keep thinking, but if I O'd late yesterday, it's still possible...I mean, I felt some O pains at about 1am (when I was getting in to bed shy.gif) so if it was O, we DTD only 6.5hrs after!  Tell me I'm crazy so I won't get my hopes up!!

I might as well post a pic of what made me stay up so late....and if any of you are a FB friend of mine without either of us knowing, this pic will surely out my identity!  Lol.  It's my first knitting project since before DS was born, so it's been THREE YEARS!  I think I did a pretty good job!  It's a stuffed goat for DS...and it was practice so I could be confident knitting up a storm for all the ladies I know who are about to have little babies on their hands.  Without further ado, "One" (named by DS):

Oh my gosh Bugglette, that little goat is so cute I wanna cry!! Love it!

You are fine, I think... 6.5 hours after the spike is still within the 24-48 hour time period the egg is good for! Let's hope for a BFP! :)

Bugglette--That goat is adorable!  :)

AFM:  I never had any more bleeding or spotting since Saturday so I'm not quite sure what that was...  I had some pretty good cramps on Monday evening and was sure AF was finally going to show with full fury but nothing...  VERY strange!  Anyway, I'm going to start temping in the morning so I can have a full week of temps just in case that was AF and I am gearing up to O...  Is it possible to have a little bleeding and spotting PP for no apparent reason? help.gif

I'm so stinkin confused...  LOL!  And here I was thinking that since I've been pregnant once it would be easier to know the signs the second time around...

So thankful for my DH and beautiful DD (21 months TTC, now 4 months old)  TTC #2 while BF
I am one lucky lady!

Thanks for the welcome!  That goat is SO CUTE!  Big :hug for your sister.  Hope you still caught your egg!

So, the thought of baby #3 is terrifying to me for a lot of reasons, lol, so I probably won't be doing too much active talking about my cycle and other events, but instead more about the "big picture" of my thoughts and fears and hopes and stuff.  Even so, I am a little bit excited about the possibility.  We're meeting a midwife on Wednesday so I think the whole process might feel more real to us after we meet her.  She was the MW I'd wanted for DS, but I never even talked to her on the phone back then.  Just through email, she told me that she had something else going on in DS's due month and wasn't taking any clients.  So I picked someone that she sometimes works with, and I liked her, but my close friends who I've spoken with who have used both have told me they like my first choice better, so DH and I are going to meet with her and see how we click.  At least three of my close IRL friends who were pregnant the same time I was pregnant with DS are now pregnant again, and also countless online friends, so I have a lot of "peer pressure" going on, lol.  (And two of those friends are using the MW I want to use).

In other news, I started that Couch to 5K plan last week,  and that's been fun.  I forgot to stretch the first day and my calves hurt so bad that for the next three days, I could barely walk.  That was the last time I forgot to stretch.  :p  I run back and forth in the length of our apartment, and DS (19m) just laughs at me.  Yesterday when I was running, DD (4) was following me and said, "This is a fun game, running back and forth!"  lol.  So if I don't get pregnant this first cycle then I will for sure be able to at least complete the program.  And I don't really think it will happen in one shot, anyway, since both DD and DS took 3 cycles of actively trying and this time, I'm both older and also NOT actively trying (although some people will say that not using protection IS trying, haha), but just doing whatever.  So since I'm reasonably sure that it will take a while, that is helping me be okay with going forward with no protection, lol.  But, if it DOES happen the first time, then some of you will have to come over and scoop me up off the floor because I will have fainted away, lol.

bugglette: I LOVE the goat! So cute :) I haven't knit anything since DD was born! I'm sorry about your sister...I hope she is doing ok. And I also think you still have a chance at a bfp :)

grapesbunch: I think spotting can be common before the first ppaf. Then again, I'm starting to realize everything is "normal" during the pp time!!

Afm: I went for my 7DPO progesterone test earlier today. I'm not sure what I'm hoping to see but it's done now. I'm having the longest cycle I've ever had in my life! I've also decided to attempt nightweaning DD starting this weekend. I feel like it's time to at least try. I'm back to work in July and I need more than 2 hour stretches of sleep to function at work. I'm scared and a little sad but I also feel confident that it's a good thing for all of us. I haven't felt this way re: nightweaning before so my gut tells me we're ready.

Bugglette I love the goat too!!! It's so cute! I'm holding out hope for you this cycle, it sounds like you DTD quickly after O, so it's possible that you caught the eggy.
I'm so sorry about your sister's loss... hug.gif I hope she is surrounded by support from lots of people who love her, and she can find peace and a rainbow pregnancy.

Carmen good luck with the nightweaning! I hope your DD finally starts sleeping longer stretches. DS nurses a lot through the night but we definitely have lots of days of only 1 or 2 nursings so we do ok.

Fingers crossed for BFPs for everyone waiting to POAS. fingersx.gif

AFM - I think I'm about to O, I'm a little crampy and have very full boobs - I think my milk supply goes up around O time. headscratch.gif
I'm going to try and jump DH tonight. orngtongue.gif

I got my progesterone results back already (love the new online ehealth!). It was really low...4.4. Which I believe is borderline "maybe something happened." I'm imagining it's because I O'd so late. I'm bummed but I guess I should expect it....my LP hasn't been longer than 9 days.
