Hi all,

I have been trying to conceive for some months now and getting really anxiousI have an irregular period and do not ovulate every month. Some months my menstrual blood is not the normal reddish color, it could be brown blood clots that comes like a thread and sometimes mixed with vaginal mucus such that in such  a month, I do not need to use sanitary pads. I do not know if it means that in such a month I did not ovulate at all. I really want a baby now and do not know what to do. I have read some threads on this site that said soy isoflavones can induce ovulation but because of the adverse effects, my husband would not agree to me taking it. So we settled for me taking vitex instead. I have ordered for one now.

I have quite a number of questions:

1. This brown blood clots that comes in some months, is that okay? I mean I hope I am not the only one that has experienced such and does it mean that in such a month I have not ovulated.

2. I read that vitex takes a while to work and helps to regulate menstrual cycle. Would it also help me to ovulate monthly. Then what dosage of vitex can I take?

3. I just ordered for  BBT Thermometre to help me chart my BBT, How is this used and how do I know when I ovulate?

4.Are there any other natural ways through which  I can induce ovulation?

Thanks for your help

The brown blood and clots are old blood. I've had them, too. One of the practitioners I've been seeing told me that this was related to the position of my uterus (prolapsed), which was not allowing all of the blood to come out with menstruation. In fact, she attributed this old blood to being part of the reason why I had a very early miscarriage--a womb with old blood and clots in it is less hospitable to implantation. You might try seeing someone who does Mayan arvigo abdominal massage, or trying some self-care womb massage on your own.

I am also dealing with irregular periods and not certain whether or not I am ovulating every cycle. Everyone will probably recommend the Taking Charge of Your Fertility book for learning the basics on how to chart and track ovulation. In addition to BBT, you can get ovulation predictor kits (try wondfo on Amazon for a bunch of cheap ones).

I don't know anything about Vitex, so I can't help you there. I'm trying to bring my hormones and cycle back into balance with diet and herbs. Of course stress plays a huge role as well, and it's a bit of a catch-22 knowing that obsessing about having a baby may be the very thing preventing us from getting pregnant.

Good luck!

In response to vitex, it is supposed to regulate everything about your cycle as far as I have read. A lot of things about vitex are very inconclusive but it should help with your ovulation. I have read from many people who have taken it with regular cycles but no ovulation that it has helped them, and the same for people with just completely irregular cycles! Good luck smile.gif

Fertility Friend is also a good website to help you chart your cycles.  They have an e-book you can buy on how to chart.  It would include info on BBT.  Good Luck!

Thanks a lot for your help and advice.

The idea of a prolapsed uterus is really scary and its miscarriage effect,

I would try the vitex and  I really hope it works so fast. I hope to hear the good news of being pregnant soon. That would be one of the best news for me this year.

Thanks about the fertilityfriend site, I would check it now.

I appreciate you all for your resonses.

jjh5351 01-10-2013 05:58 AM

Keep on mind, vitex can take 3-6 months to work!

xyz0145 01-10-2013 06:56 AM

Yes, that is true. Could one use both Vitex and Soy Isoflavones together. For instance, take Vitex daily but for CD 3-7  take Soy Isoflavones and return to Vitex the next day?

jjh5351 01-10-2013 08:24 AM

I don't think you're supposed to take them in combination but I would check with an herbalist or doctor.

jjh5351 01-10-2013 09:00 AM

I just did a bit of google work and the consensus seems to be to not take the isoflavones and vitex together. Obviously take that with a grain of salt as it was just a google search, but people say they cancel each other out.

Hi everyone,

Thanks alot for your help thus far. It is really great to be able to share these experiences and also get response from people.

So these are the updates I have so far:

I ovulated in January and decided to chart my BBT using fertility friend. FF thinks I ovulated on CD 27 but the lines are broken and not a full line. What does that mean?

Unfortunately DH was not around around that period.

After ordering for Vitex online and repeated failed delivery, I finally got it from a local store and I should get soy isoflavones tomorrow. I would start taking the vitex tonight.

1. I know someone has already responded to the combination of teh vitex and isoflavones, I asked the pharmacist who thought it could be combined in the way I said but he was not really sure. Please does anyone knwo if it is possible to combine daily dosage of Vitex with Soy Isoflavones (just on CD 4-7) and then continue with Vitex,. Or do I need to stop Vitex during those days? Or should I just forget the Soy Isoflavones option entirely?

2 Can one take Vitex during menstruation or it should be pasued?

3. I have also read that Vitex should not be taken during preganancy. What happens when one has not yet detected the pregnancy since one has to wait for about two weeks? Because if I pause the drug and turns out that I am not pregnant, doesn't that mean that I have stopped the drug which is supposed to be a daily drug?

Thanks a lot for your help..

jjh5351 02-12-2013 01:10 PM

1) I would ditch the soy if you're planning on taking vitex, from what I understand. Apparently they counteract each other. The vitex does take longer to work but I believe it will help with many of your issues!
2) I've been taking vitex during my cycle with no issues and I wasn't advised otherwise.
3) vitex is kind of up in the air as to whether it is safe to be taken during the first full trimester of pregnancy or not. Personally I think I will continue to take it once pregnancy is detected but I will wean off of it for 2-3 weeks because that is supposed to deter the chance of a miscarriage.
Good luck! I hope this all turns out for you!

xyz0145 02-12-2013 02:04 PM

Thanks alot jjh5351I would just hold on on the Soy Iso then. I have already ordered for it.  Guess I would just keep it away.

TTC #1 With Dh . 19 Years Old . Not Ovulating. I Was Doing Research On Things That Could Help Me. I Came Across Vitex. . Vitex Had LOTS Of Success Stories And Its Been Getting Used Since 150 BC . My Questions Are Have You Tried It? If So Did It Work? When Should i Start Taking It, As Soon As I Buy It? When To Stop Taking It If i Get A BFP? How Many Times A Day To Take It? What Dosage To Take?  And Anything Else You Think I should Know = ) . Thanks Ladies

jjh5351 02-12-2013 04:22 PM

I'm taking vitex because I was not previously ovulating, though I have a regular cycle which could be controversial. It has caused me to ovulate in only 2 months and has diminished many of my horrible premenstrual signs. When you receive vitex there is not really a lot of agreement on when to begin. I started when I received it but many people wait until their period starts. As far as stopping when you receive a BFP- I've read to wean. It reduces the occurrence of a miscarriage. Dosage should be included on the bottle and I would consult a knowledgable source (doctor or herbalist) about it if you are super concerned. Not all vitex is the same so there is not one widely accepted dosage or use. Please do remember that this is not a miracle cure. It takes anywhere from 3-6 months to really produce results that are consistent with what the herb is supposed to do. I hope you've contacted your doctor just to make sure everything is ok, good luck!

xyz0145 02-12-2013 05:40 PM

@ Blossomheartsx jjh5351has dealt with your question extensively, i guess there is nothing much to add. I just started taking it yesterday so she has a better understanding on it. I am hoping it works for me too as well and as fast as it can :-)

xyz0145 02-22-2013 11:10 AM

Hi everyone,

I woke up this morning desperate and wish I can just sort of hear that I am now pregnant. Whao, I never thought I would still be TTC by this time after so many months of trying.

I have been charting my bbt on  and initially it thought i ovulated on CD27, later it chnaged to CD33 and now it is saying it is not even sure i ovulated at all. I must be sincere that I also do not understand my cycle really, sometimes it is very short and sometimes it is short. I am jst 24 years old and never got pregnant. I used to have a regular cycle and my menstrual period was just 3 days. All of a sudden, when I was 20 years or so for three months I did not menstruate. My mum who is a nrse, kept assuring me things were okay. Thankfully after that things retrned to normal but for just about a year or so. After that, my menses became so irregular (mind you, I only became sexually active a year ago after i got married). sometimes  my cycle could be about thirty days but most times it was as long as 45-63 days. No matter how I complained, my mm felt i was okay.

At some point I talked with a Gyne and i had a scan of my ovaries and uterus and he said there was nothing wrong, I was only not menstruating every month. So now that I am TTC, i called the gyn again and he recommends me taking clomid ( I have relocated since marriage and I haven't seen a doctor since then about this). Clomid is a prescription drug and unless I see a doctor, I cannot buy it plus I am scared of all the effects, so also is DH hence our decision to go for vitex.

We have this opinion that the services of a fertility clinic would be very expensive and we are not sure it is covered by or health insurance. I am even not happy with the fact that I cannot conceive after all these months since I wasn't on any pills before now. It is so frustrating.

Ten days ago, I started taking vitex and I have recently read that green tea also helps in fertility. I have decided to look at the varios natural ways.

Did I mention that in some months, all I see are streaks of brown blood instead of the normal red blood? I have seen the brown blood sparsely some days ago and the quantity seems to have increased today. It made me consider inducing the red blood menstration throgh lots of vit. c and warm water(that helps I hope) then taking soy isoflavones to induce ovulation.

But if i do that out of desperation, it means I will be staying off the vitex I was using before.

I am so confused and unhappy about all these. TTC is also getting at DH.

Thanks for listening. Now my qestions:

1. How expensive are the services of a gyn or fertility clinic? and are they that expensive ? are they usually covered by health insurance?

2. how soon would vitex cause me to ovulate or if I am this desperate,, do i just ditch it and use the isoflavones to induce ovulation? I am afraid that if i have hormonal isses, and get pregnant, I do not want to have a miscarriage or any of such issues. I also want a healthy baby really.

3.I have read of various herbs that aid fertility, I hope it is safe to take them together? Also importantly, I want to know if one can get them in tea form, I am not good in  making tea from the raw herbs, more so , I do not know where to get them around me.

mamaBlue 02-22-2013 06:29 PM

Well if you have hormonal issues, you should be able to see an RE and have it covered by insurance. Ask your gyno about a referral to an RE for further endocrine testing.

jjh5351 02-22-2013 07:32 PM

I agree- with most insurance plans if you are referred to a specialist by any type of primary care physician you should be able to receive insurance coverage. I'm sure your insurance would be happy to answer your questions if you call! As far as vitex- it does take about 3 months on average, but for me, I ovulated for the first time on my second cycle of it last month. I've just read that the isoflavones aren't that great for you so they sort of scare me. And other herbs- I know you're not supposed to mix a few different ones. Google is a great resource for these things if you do not have a knowledgable source- like an herbalist or a doctor familiar with hers- to go to.

xyz0145 04-23-2013 01:54 AM

Thanks everyone for your help so far.

I finally went to see a Gyn in Feb and I was given progesterone to help induce ovulation so they could collect blood samples to test my hormones. Somehow in the first cycle, my veins were not accessible. I was so devastated. But DH encouraged me. I had to induce Menses again and this time, there was more than enough blood for the test :-)

The doctor finally said it was PCOS, oestrogen level is okay but testosterone level is high. So she advised DH to go for a test too just to ensure there is an wholesome treatment. She recommended treatment with Clomiphene to induce O but before that, I decided to try Soy Isoflavone for this month.  So I took that on CD 4-7. I had read to expect O btw 5-9 days of taking it.  Recently, I had stomach cramps, breast tenderness and heaviness. From CD  14-17 I saw egg white cervical mucous(it was not so white, I think it was because I have been trying all through the 5-9days after Iso window i was told, so it was probably mixed with vitex). Yesterday, which was CD 18, I had a my lowest BBT so far and also saw brown blood and some red blot spots. today's BBT shot higher (CD19) so I am hoping I actually ovulated and that I may have ovulated yesterday.

But I am surprised to see brown blood again today. That is scaring me.

Many things are running through my mind, if i just ovulated, why am I seeing this brown blood today? I have read so much about PCOS and early MC and I do not want that, I would rather take progesterone to prevent it. But I have not tested for pregnancy since I am waiting till CD 25 or 28, I do not want to test so early only to see that it is negative.

My Gyn had prescribed progesterone for me to induce ovulaiton in case the Soy Iso does not work so I can start the clomiphene in teh bext cycle. So what do I do now? I read a comment from another person who said brown blood in the luteal phase indicates low progesterone level and all that. So I am wondering of i should start the progesterone already and incase I actually conceived it should help rather than inducing ovulation.

I had actually thought that the egg should be able to implant and I should test positive first. Then i can have my progesterone level tested and the doctor can know my progesterone level and then make the right prescriptions.

I really don't want to freak out. But please does anyone have an idea what all these means and any experience on this?

I am sort of confused

xyz0145 04-23-2013 01:57 AM

Error:  I saw egg white cervical mucous(it was not so white, I think it was because I have been trying all through the 5-9days after Iso window i was told, so it was probably mixed with vitex  (I meant mixed with semen. I stopped taking vitex over a month ago since I was taking progesterone)

jjh5351 04-23-2013 05:25 AM

I know quite a few people here who take the progesterone after implantation should have occurred to ensure that the little one sticks. Of course ask your doctor first! Maybe the brown blood was implantation bleeding and you ovulated early? Are you using ovulation test strips also? I know a lot of ladies use them in combo with BBT!

Also I've got PCOS and just conceived through use of vitex so all hope isn't lost! We tried for a year, then used vitex for 3 months and got pregnant! I'm 10+3 weeks along today, so keep trying!

xyz0145 04-23-2013 08:22 AM

I am so happy to hear about your pregnancy. Congrats. I hope mine comes soon

Now i feel bad to have dumped vitex after using it for just a month (maybe I should have tried for a longer period :-) ) But I wanted something really fast that was why I decided to see a gyn and also try Iso but things have not happened that fast.

My dr does not seem to be convinced about Iso actually inducing ovulation. She thinks it is the Iso that is causing all these.Well, I would go in for a check tomorrow anyway. I guess she believes so much in Clomid.

I wish things could  happen faster but apparently, patience is one virtue I would have to cultivate in this area.

I had suggested taking progesterone to her but she doesnt want me to. Here, it is a prescription drug and if she does not prescribe it, I cannot get it on my own so... I am at her mercy now :-)

Thanks for your response.

Congrats once again and I pray mine comes soonest too.

jjh5351 04-23-2013 09:56 AM

If you're willing to give it some months, vitex is definitely something that works for lots of people. It may not work for others, of course but from what I saw on many vitex success stories, the majority had success with it. I've read mixed reveiws on soy, so I wasn't willing to try it. Good luck, I hope you and your doctor figure out something to work things out!

xyz0145 04-24-2013 03:02 AM

Thanks. Dr does not think Iso induced ovulation in this period so I guess I am officially dumping that. Since I intend taking clomid, I guess I cannot now take Vitex again. I have to be patient and hope clomid helps.

Thanks for the support and how are you doing and the baby?

jjh5351 04-24-2013 05:59 AM

Good luck with clomid! I've been really super sick, but I'm nearing 12 weeks so I hope it fades off here soon!

xyz0145 04-24-2013 09:17 AM

Just curious: what was the dosage of the vitex you took. The one I bought has just 4mg chasteberry fruit and I read that one needs between 500-1000mg for it to work so I am wondering if this one would have worked.

jjh5351 04-24-2013 12:49 PM

Yeah mine was 400 mg per tablet and I took two a day- so that's definitely very low. I know the tincture is stronger- you can get it almost anywhere too! I got mine on amazon smile.gif
