Oh no Jodi, I'm so sorry. It's times like this you wish you just didn't know. The waiting makes it so much harder.

I hope you don't mind advice, but I think in a similar situation I'd wait until an amnio was possible, or that early genetic testing, and then decide what to do (if you haven't miscarried). DH and I have talked a lot about what we would do if there were severe defects. Something like our son's we could handle (barely) but more than that would just rip us apart after what we've already been thrugh. I'll be thinkng about you.

Jodi, I wanted to add what our genetic counselor told us about testing. Often many heart defects (probably others too) that are just structural are not genetic...so wouldn't be detected on a chromosome assay. They are just random events. Our son's is like that--no genetic cause. But a level II u/s around 14-15 weeks can show a lot. Plus you can get a fetal echocardiogram around 16-18 weeks that can determine most heart defects and give a fairly accurate diagnosis. That's plenty early to decide what to do, if you want options. I am guessing for other problems there are similar less invasive tests than amnio. The fetal echo is basically a very advanced ultrasound of the heart & vessels.

Jodi,
jeez, (((((((((((hugs sweetie)))))))))))))))))))
Just know we all love you & support ANY decision you may make in the upcoming days.
You will not be judged here.

This is a tough journey for your family right now.

Being of advanced maternal age, DH & I had all kinds of decisions to make when I was pg with DS.
I did opt for an Amnio as we felt better with knowledge & how to deal with what might come up.
the actual amnio was no problem medically or pain wise.
I've been in tons more pain having blood drawn.
B/f the amnio was realy intense Level II U/s & check vessels, nuchal fold in the neck, I mean everything!
I hope my experience helps a little.

please know that we want you to take care & you can PM me & I'll give you my phone # if you wish to talk

thank you everyone.....you really do make me feel better.

shannon - thank you so much for sharing your story. i never even thought about the possibility of a clotting disorder. what kind of tests did you have done to check for this? i'm so terrified that this will happen again with a future pregnancy. was it a fluke or was it my bad egg? or was it related to dh's bad morphology? i've read a few studies that found an increased rate of m/c in couples where the man had poor morphology. sigh...

sleepymama and polka - thank you for sharing your stories as well. if i make it that far, i will almost certainly opt for the amnio. i know chorionic villi sampling is available around 10-12 weeks but that comes with a lot more risk. like risk of limb deformities, missing digits, etc. at birth. sounds too risky to me.....plus, i don't want to have to worry about anything else being wrong.

off to prepare for tomorrow.....we are hosting out of town relatives for the weekend.....did i mention she's 5 months pregnant????? yeah, this should definitely test my sanity.

Jodi, I no longer have my trusty list of all the disorders I was tested for but the main ones are:
FVL (far more common than once believed)
antiphosolipid antibodies (this is what I have)
Lupus anti-coagulant factor (you don't need to have lupus to have this)
Protein C & S
Factor II deficiency
MTHFR (I may have the initials mixed up)

if you type recurrent miscarriage into your browser you'll get a TON on clotting factors and what to test for (I just find it disgusting that women need to suffer multiple losses before these things are looked at) Also look up DVT in pregnancy and you'll get them all that way too.

Hosting someone who's 5 mos preg right now?? My God, can you cancel them??? I just can't even imagine! I'll be thinking of you.

My last cycle was 28 days....usually is 32-34 days.... who knows.

Jodi,

Before ds, I had a miscarriage~major bleeding on my part.
When I became pg with ds, I started to spot and I freaked. It was more than a little but less than a lot. Because of my major bleeding experience, and because this baby was SO wanted, well.....I was a mess.
Then, I started to worry that maybe I was supposed to be miscarrying the baby, and I wasn't!! I can so relate to your fears! I really think if you are supposed to miscarry, chances are really great that you will.

My prayers are with you (((((((((((((sweetie)))))))))))
