These may be things you already know, but he needs to be sure he's well hydrated, not wear briefs, avoid caffiene and other additives, and make sure he's getting all the nutrients he needs (including EFA's). This is just general stuff, I am sure someone here knows more.

I would be interested in wether or not anyone had used acupuncture or other alternative therapies to get their DH's count up. Also, for a guy with a low count, would the phytoestrogens in soy be a problem?

Good luck and I am sending vigorous and numerous spermie vibes your way.

XM mentioned some good things.

Here is some (very concise) info on male infertility (low count or quality) in general from the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine that hasn't been mentioned already.

general measures:
eliminate environmental pollutants
stop or reduce consumption of ALL drugs (illegal, Rx, and OTC)

Diet:
avoid--free radicals, sat fats, transfatty acids, and cottonseed oil
increase consumption of--legumes (esp soy), dark colored veggies and fruits, and nuts and seeds.
consume 8-10 servings of veggies, 2-4 of fresh fruit, and 1/2 raw nuts or seeds

daily nutritional supplements:
high potency multi-vitamin
vit C: 500-3000mg 3x a day
vit E: 600-800 IU
beta-carotene: 100,000-200,000 IU
folic acid: 400 mcg
vit B12: 1000 mcg
zinc: 30-60mg

botanical medicines
panax ginseng
eleutherococcus senticosus
pygeum africanum

for dosage on botanicals, just ask. It's a lot to type up at one time.

From the same source as the above:

The phytoestrogens in soy have about 0.2 percent of the estrogenic activity of the main human estrogen. "Their weak estrogenic effect actually exerts an antiestrogenic effect, as it prevents the binding of the body's own estrogen to the receptor."

Right on, Whit. A friend of a friend is Vegan and was telling us that she chooses rice milk instead of soy milk because the phytoestrogens messed with her hormones, so I was'nt sure if other females have that problem, let alone if it would be a factor for a guy. Glad some one knew the answer!
