Quote:
"Maca, Lepidium meyenii, is an annual plant which produces a radish-like root. The root of maca is typically dried and stored, and will easily keep for seven years. The plant is cultivated in the Junin plateau of Peru's Central Highlands, and was highly revered by the Inca.

Maca has been shown to increase libido, sexual function and overall energy. Maca strengthens and balances the endocrine system of both sexes in the appropriate gender-specific manner. Its action focuses on the hypothalamus/pituitary axis, which governs the intricate and delicate hormonal system of our body. It does not contain any hormones. (Note: If you have herpes 1 or 2, avoid maca - it contains large quantities of l-arginine, which may aggravate flare-ups).

To date there are no known toxic side effects to Maca. It is a very safe food and just as a common potato or turnip would not interfere with medications or supplements, neither will Maca. In fact, Maca will assist the body in utilizing supplements to their optimum capacity as it helps to further digest and assimilate the nutrients.

To be consistent with Peruvian use you'd take a minimum of six to ten 500-milligram capsules or 1-2 tablespoons of powder daily, equal to 3,000 to 5,000 milligrams of maca. Remember that Maca is a food; less than 1500mg will likely not deliver desired results. (Note: the dose most often recommended is 1500-3,000 milligrams daily.)"

Thanks for starting the new thread, LibraryMo. Can you up me to 1800 mgs a day? So far, I've noticed increased libido. Now, I want to see what effect maca has on my fertility. Hopefully, I'll get that BFP soon!

Updated to here

My DH has been really slacking in the maca-taking department so I removed him from the list. I, on the other hand, have been doing well this month with keeping up and I'm hopeful that this month will be the month. I'm 9DPO so, just a few more days...

Thanks, although I seem to have really nice looking charts...and then AF shows, so I'm trying to be optimistic but not crazy. The last week I've had really bad indigestion and I was hoping that it was some ridiculously early pg symptom, but I went to the dr. today and she thinks it's an ulcer! What?!? I won't start taking the medicine until AF shows though, just to be safe.

Hi everyone!! I havent got the MACA yet, but I've been at work all day and am hoping it will be there when I get home tonite! I've been talking to DH about the MACA and told him about the libido and "crazy sex dreams" as well as about the studies that have shown it can increase sperm count and I think he might try it. Any suggestions on the best way to start off with it?? Like in OJ or certain flavored juice?? I really want him to take to it and if I mess up the delivery system he may not take it at all. Smoothies arent realistic right now, maybe in a couple weeks as our blender is broken. Thanks guys!

Hi there and hope the maca has arrived for you! I have a DH who sounds just like yours, get it wrong and you'll NEVER get him to take it again! Think there's a lot of them around! Anyway, I find anything with banana works well to disguise the taste, although really now that we've been taking it a while we are getting used to it. I normally do make smoothies but if DH is late home or I haven't time I also keep a supply of store bought orange & banana or tropical fruit juices, the ones you pick up in the fridge rather than the concentrate stuff. Not sure if that will help or not but thought I'd let you know!

AAM - nothing much to report CD9 and waiting to O! Finally made an appointment to get the referal I need for the OB at the infertility clinic (just the way the NHS works!) and I'm really anxious about it! I want them to refer me to a different one to the lady I had with my DD as she was hopeless! (most of our OBs here take the first referals for infertility and then pass you on to the specialist centre if necessary) She's surgery happy! When I saw her last year she wanted to open my c-section up for the 5th time 'to see if there was damage to my uterus' - yeah like you couldn't have checked it out the other times after your first botch up - gggrrrrr! I have to say that she did say that after she repaired it the 3rd time she didn't think I would have any problems conceiving but to wait 3 months, that's what we did and here we are almost three years on!

Sorry to have rambled, just so nervous of going down the route. I think I'm more scared that they will say there's something so wrong that there's not a chance I will ever conceive (and carry to term) another baby than I am of any other part of it.

Me & DH TTC #3!  DD1 is 8 and DD2 is 2.  Struggled to conceive DD2, eventually getting a BFP after 35 months ttc & a month out from starting fertility treatment!  Now TTC#3, had an early miscarriage in Sept 2011 greensad.gif.  Here's my chart http://www.fertilityfriend.com/home/1eeaa4

doodledoo I would be nervous too. Is there any way you could mention to the referring Dr. that you'd rather not have that Dr. in specific?

JennRN TTC#1 I think there's a minimum # of posts you have to have before you can add more than 1 smilie.

As for me...my temp is still relatively high but I'm not feeling one bit different (except for the indigestion, but even that's getting better!) and for some reason I'm not too hopeful this month. This is really hard.

Jenn... DP didn't taste it all the one time I made him try it with a level just 1 tbls mixed in with Mango Peach Orange Juice by Dole. Out of all my experiments that juice goes the best!

I did not realize how wonderfully it works til the store was out of it this weekend and I had to settle for the Pineapple Banana Orange Juice and it is AWFUL chugging it down. I'm thinking of hitting the store tomorrow to get the Mango and giving the rest of the pineapple to my FIL, as he likes it.

CD 14 here, still waiting to O, trying to be patient. I think I had some ewcm today after a bm. I O'd on cd 33 last time, so I'm hoping that I don't have to wait that long. I've been on the maca about a month now, so maybe it's starting to regulate things.

doodledoo - I hope everything works out. I like librarymo's suggestion- make sure you don't get that Dr.!

LibraryMo- I just did some chart stalking and saw that last month you had a big dip 10dpo, but this cycle you are still way up high. Could be a good sign!!

JenRN - I think you just have to experiment to see what makes the maca taste best for you. I've found that chocolate and banana seem to compliment it best for me, so I make a smoothie every morning with 1/2 banana and 8 oz of unsweetened chocolate almond milk. That way it actually tastes almost good, but it keeps the calories low. Good luck! The first couple days were rough for me, but hang in there an you'll get used to it.

As for me, I think I actually o'd this cycle!!! WOOOO!!!! I don't think my chances for bfp are very good b/c our bding was not at all optimal (stressfull week - in law visit ), but I am just so glad that my body is kind of getting back into the swing of things. I don't know if it was the maca for sure, but who knows, it could be! yay maca!

Thanks LibraryMo for taking over the thread

I'm utterly confused with my chart. I've been waiting waiting waiting to ovulate....today is CD22 and I usually ovulate CD14 or CD15. Finally this morning my temp spiked, so I thought, great I ovulated yesterday! So I plugged in the temp to the chart and FF now says I ovulated on CD14, which would be right in line with all my other cycles.

However, there was a lot of bouncing of the temps, low bouncing, after CD14, like never before, so it didn't even occur to me that I ovulated then.

Do you think Maca could have created all these weird temps?

Can I ask a couple questions?

I bought some maca today at the health food store, some organic powder and some capsules. I confess, I didn't fully research before I purchased. :
Anyway, I read in the first thread that people with herpes shouldn't take maca because the l-arginine might cause a flare-up? Here's the thing, DH gets the sores on his lips. I already have DH on L-arginine because I'd read in "Getting Pregnant Naturally" that it was good for sperm production, and he hasn't had any flare-ups from that. Do you think giving him a couple capsules a day would cause a flare-up? Also, I would assume if the maca already contains L-arginine that if I put him on maca, i could take him off the l-arginine capsules?

I'm going to check out the smoothie recipes for myself using the powder I bought. Anyone have any experience with breakthrough bleeding being reduced with maca? I start spotting at least a week before my period starts, often even earlier, and my LP is only 11-12 days as it is. I'm wondering if the cycle-balancing effects extend to fixing that problem.

Thanks!!

Good morning everyone! CD15 here. Still no MACA at my door. BUT my monitor gave me a PEAK this morning! Yay! So it appears I may ovulate soon. You guys think I should start off with just 1 tbsp/day or jump right in to the 2, whenever the dern stuff arrives.

Jenn, a lot may depend on taste... 1 tbls does mix better... so maybe do one in the morning and one at night if it's too strong.

I have that herpes simplex I (oral) and I didn't have any problems with the maca until I read that thing on the other thread...and then I only got one teeny tiny little sore in the corner of my mouth once. I think it was the power of suggestion. If your dh is doing fine with the L-arginine I wouldn't worry about him taking the maca. I would probably take him off the L-arginine if you were putting him on maca. Good luck!

Thanks! That's what i was thinking.
Course, if I'm lucky this 2ww will result in a bfp and I can sell all this stuff. Oh, actually, if I start maca and get pg, should I stay on it through the first trimester or does it matter?

I don't think it really matters, Mama Rana... but I will say for me and A Mothers Love the Maca seems to be helping with morning sickness. I have read that about it too... so I'm keeping on it for now.

Hi all, I've been missing in action for a few days - just needed to regroup a little. Doctorsd appointment is Monday and I'm trying not to think about it, although I've been talking to the strangest people (not strange just people I wouldn't normally talk about TTC with!) to try to get a name for an OB at the hospital I will be refered to who is empathetic and good! Will be pushing very hard to get a different one.

Anyway, we're on a bit of a maca rollercoaster at the mo! some of you may remember that DH and I both had an awful bug a couple of weeks back. Well, we now think it was our new batch of maca! We both started on the new bag and got the bug, so we were off it for a 5 or 6 days as it seemed to be irritating the 'bug'. well I took my 2 tbsp yesterday for the first having been fully recovered and bam! horrendous (and I mean hooorrrrrrennnnndddoussss!) cramps, vomitting and diarrhoea within 90 mins of taking it. Needless to say couldn't talk DH into taking his when he got home. Spoke to the company today who say they haven't had any other reports but will replace it with a different batch number. : it'll be here tomorrow and we can start again!

How's everyone else doing? Is there anyone just waiting in the wings to be our next BFP?

JSMa - congratulations! Not convinced that I actually said it to you yet! H&H9! Here's hoping we all follow you soon.

Hi there pregnant lady!
Can you see the big green eyes from there?

I really don't want to get the people a bad name as I truly think they just got a dodgy batch, but it was a UK company that I had mentioned before. Plantspirit I think is their name.

How are you doing? Is it true that the maca is helping with morning sickness as well?
